Mucknell Abbey, an Anglican Monastery just outside of Worcester, is seeking a skilled Cook/Chef to prepare nourishing meals for the resident Community and their guests and visitors. Working in a well-equipped kitchen, you'll have the opportunity to create meals that reflect care, simplicity, and hospitality. If you value quiet surroundings, independence in your work, and the satisfaction of cooking with fresh ingredients, this role could be a perfect fit. Key Responsibilities: 1. Prepare and cook lunches and leave suppers prepared for the Community and their guests, producing nutritious, balanced, home style meals using fresh and where possible seasonal ingredients. Numbers to be catered for can vary between 8 and 20, but are typically around 14 to 16. Lunch is served promptly at 1pm. 2. In collaboration with the Kitchen Manager (a member of the Community), plan weekly menus, having due regard to special dietary requirements, which will be notified in advance. There is a set budget for the year. 3. Complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks. 4. Bake bread once or twice a week as needed. Key Requirements: 1. Demonstrate competence at least to S/NVQ2 in Catering and Hospitality or Professional Cookery, or equivalent. 2. 3-5 years of relevant experience, including setting or helping to set menus. 3. Be comfortable working independently, quietly and with minimum supervision. 4. Have good time management skills, and an organised, calm and confident approach to kitchen work. Desirable: 1. Experience of catering for a lactose-free diet 2. Experience of working with ‘Safer Foods, Better Business’. 3. A current driving licence and access to own vehicle, unless suitable alternative arrangements can be made. Public transport links require a 20-30 minute walk to the Monastery. Other information: • Working hours and days are negotiable. We are looking for 6 hours per day, 5 days a week on either a Tuesday to Saturday or Monday to Friday basis, with a start time between 8 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. Once a pattern has been agreed, it would be fixed, although we may occasionally vary days or hours of work by mutual agreement, for example to cover special events. • We offer 33 days paid holiday, including Bank Holidays. • Clothing and footwear will be provided. • We welcome applicants of all faiths and none, while asking that they respect the Christian and monastic values that guide our organisation.
