A well-established and reputable building services contractor is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Manager for its Ballymena head office. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced design professional to play a critical role in leading and coordinating Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health (MEP) design systems across a wide range of construction projects.The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring MEP systems are designed, delivered and maintained efficiently, safely and cost-effectively, supporting overall project success from pre-construction through to handover.
Responsibilities
* Lead the design of MEP systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical systems, and mechanical controls to meet project goals and cost plans.
* Manage the internal MEP design team, assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and ensuring timely delivery.
* Collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, and project managers to align design with programme milestones.
* Coordinate external consultants and contractors, managing EWNs and NCNs effectively.
* Document key design decisions to ensure traceability and clear communication with delivery teams.
* Attend and lead technical workshops and coordination meetings with stakeholders.
* Support the preparation and review of technical submittals, specifications, RFIs, and BIM models.
* Oversee MEP design budgets and third-party contracts, reviewing fees and supplier quotes.
* Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, BIM standards, BEPs, and regulatory requirements.
* Provide technical support across pre-construction, delivery, and facilities management phases.
* Contribute insights to bid preparation and early-stage engineering reviews.
* Support continuous improvement by providing feedback on external design resources.
Skills and Qualifications
* A minimum of 5 years' experience in a design-related role within the building services or construction industry.
* Comprehensive understanding of MEP design across the full project lifecycle, from pre-construction through to final handover.
* Experience managing internal design teams and collaborating with external stakeholders.
* Strong working knowledge of technical systems, BIM modelling, and project coordination tools (e.g., Revit, Navisworks).
* Effective communication, leadership, and project management skills.
* Ability to take ownership of complex design projects while meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards.
