Droplet Scientific Ltd | Southampton Science Park | On-site | £45,000–£50,000
Droplet Scientific is an ambitious medtech startup developing realtime and continuous biomarker monitoring devices to improve patient care. As part of our founding engineering team, you will help transform advanced laboratory prototypes into robust, scalable products with real clinical impact.
We are seeking a Mechanical Product Design Engineer to take ownership of mechanical design from early concepts through prototype builds, verification testing, and small-batch readiness. This is a practical, hands-on role with significant autonomy, responsibility, and opportunity to shape a new product platform from the ground up.
Key responsibilities
* Translate product needs into clear, testable mechanical requirements, and maintain traceability from requirements.
* Mechanical design for key components and system from concept through production-intent iterations.
* Create and maintain 3D CAD and drawings in SolidWorks (assemblies, detailed drawings, BOMs).
* Drive rapid prototyping and iteration (3D printing, machining, off-the-shelf components), including hands-on build, design and workflow optimisation, and trouble shooting.
* Plan and execute verification tests (durability, assembly repeatability, environmental robustness, and other performance tests relevant to the system).
* Design and build test fixtures/rigs; capture results clearly and translate findings into design improvements.
* Maintain engineering documentation and revisions in QMS system (controlled documents, traceability, change notes).
* Work cross-functionally with electronics/firmware and microfluidics/chemistry to integrate the complete device.
* Support early supplier engagement and DFM/DFA improvements for small-batch builds.
Required experience and skills
* Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
* ~3+ years of industrial experience.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Proven track record of delivering mechanical designs from concept to build.
* Strong SolidWorks capability (parts, assemblies, drawings) with disciplined CAD, BOM, and data management.
* Hands-on engineering mindset: comfortable building, testing, debugging, and iterating quickly.
* Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and deliver to timelines in a fast-moving startup environment.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.
* Highly motivated, collaborative engineer who enjoys working in a small, dedicated team.
Desirable
* Experience in developing medical devices, biotech instruments, laboratory equipment, or other regulated products.
* Experience in microfluidics.
* Experience working with suppliers (machining, sheet metal, plastics) and tolerance/DFM reviews.
Compensation
* £45,000–£50,000 annual salary (dependent on experience)
* 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
* Company pension scheme
* Private medical insurance
