Overview

Job summary

As a registered Anaesthetic Practitioner, you will be an accountable and autonomous practitioner to act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. You will be responsible for patient assessment, planning of care, giving and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care.

The post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate high quality, safe and compassionate care for patients in the perioperative setting, working with the perioperative multidisciplinary team (including Anaesthetists and Surgeons) to provide effective care within the Anaesthetics, Scrub and Post Anaesthetic Care disciplines, in line with scope of practice and departmental need. The post holder will support the Theatre Leadership Team to ensure standards of practice and care quality are upheld, acting as a role model, supporting the learning of others and contributing to the development and implementation of improvement ideas.

Responsibilities

* Assess, plan, and implement high quality, safe, compassionate and effective perioperative care for patients, in line with scope of practice.
* Ensure risk management / safety strategies, Trust policies and departmental procedures are adhered to in the delivery of patient care.
* Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding and practical application of evidence-based perioperative care standards in line with national recommendations and clinical guidance (e.g., NICE, AfPP).
* Ensure patient safety strategies (e.g., WHO surgical Safety / 5 steps to safer surgery) are implemented consistently and where appropriate, contribute to the development of new initiatives which support the improvement agenda.
* Promote dignity and respect, ensuring the patient is cared for in a way that meets their expectations and maximises patient experience.
* Maintain accurate, comprehensive and comprehensible records of care provision delivered in accordance with legislation, protocols and guidelines.


Person Specification

Qualifications

* Essential: First level registered nurse or registered Operating Department Practitioner
* Essential: Current registration with either NMC or HCPC
* Essential: Accredited post registration qualification in Anaesthetics or Post Anaesthetic Care (as appropriate to role)
* Essential: Evidence of continuing professional development
* Desirable: Completion of a validated, university accredited Surgical First Assistant programme of study to support extended scope of practice
* Desirable: Teaching / assessing qualification

Experience

* Essential: Experience of working within a Multidisciplinary team.
* Essential: Experience in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, using an evidence-based approach
* Essential: Experience of understanding and implementing (adhering to) Trust policies, departmental procedures and local / national guidelines.
* Essential: Experience of undertaking / recording CPD activities commensurate to the role, including keeping relevant logs to support annual appraisal / validation of extended role competencies
* Desirable: Experience across a broad range of specialities in 1 or more perioperative discipline (Anaesthetics, Scrub and Post Anaesthetic Care)
* Desirable: Evidence of supervising junior staff and leading clinical teams
* Desirable: Evidence of supporting colleagues / mentoring learners / facilitating learning within the perioperative environment
* Desirable: Evidence of post registration CPD and recent experience as a Surgical First Assistant / ability to demonstrate specialist knowledge / competence to undertake Surgical First Assistant role
