Offer description

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
• The continued success of the team has led to an increase in the number of matters we are advising on and we are looking to recruit a specialist Construction & Engineering lawyer to join our London team to work on a variety of contentious matters.
• The role is for a contentious specialist who will advise on both project advisory work to ‘live' projects, helping to manage risk and mitigate disputes, and formal disputes resolution (adjudication, High Court ligation, arbitration and mediation).
• This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in high quality contentious work, developing client relationships and the continued expansion of one of the City's preeminent specialist Construction & Engineering teams.

THE TEAM
• The Construction & Engineering Team is part of the Real Estate Group. It is a mixed contentious and non-contentious, high performing, cohesive and busy team with a strong reputation for providing associates with early levels of responsibility within a supportive and stretching environment, and you can expect to take a leading role on some matters and tasks. The team will take a genuine interest and support you with your development and career ambitions, offering excellent career prospects.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE
• The work of the group is hugely varied, from project advisory work to formal dispute resolution for clients who span the supply chain and sectors, both domestically and internationally. Current mandates span the Living Sector (with a focus on building safety), Industrial Engineering, Transport & Infrastructure, Energy & Waste, and PFI.
• You will work closely with both non-contentious colleagues, Transactional Real Estate colleagues and Projects colleagues.
• You will supervise, manage and mentor trainee solicitors and paralegals on appropriate tasks and be supervised, managed and mentored or more challenging tasks.
• You will be encouraged to play a full role in the team commensurate with your experience, assisting in pitching for work, training and helping to manage client relationships.
• You can expect to have the opportunity to play a significant role in working for clients that are key to the Division and to the firm.

YOUR AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE
To be successful in this role, you will
• Have at least 2+ PQE years' contentious construction and engineering experience in project advisory work and formal dispute resolution.
• Have demonstrable knowledge of a typical construction and engineering project and the contractual, tortious and statutory rights and obligations which arise as between the supply chain, and be able to articulate the rights and obligations confidently.
• Have experience of the types of issues which give rise to disputes on a construction and engineering sector (e.g. delay, extensions of time, liquidated damages, additional cost and defects) and be able to articulate the issues confidently.
• Have experience of adjudication and High Court litigation procedure. Experience of arbitration procedure, domestic and/or international, would be helpful but is not a prerequisite. Experience of mediation would be helpful but is not a prerequisite.
• Have demonstrable experience in ‘heavy' document management and document review, both in the early stages of a matter and as part of an ordered disclosure exercise. You will have knowledge and experience of document storage, bundling and review platforms. Experience of trial bundle platforms would be helpful but is not a prerequisite.
• Have experience of having assisted in the preparation of witness evidence and the expert evidence.
• Be a confident stakeholder manager, with evidenced experience of engaging with internal and external stakeholders of all levels.
• Maintain efficient diary and task management across a range matters, ensuring the accuracy and levels of client service expected within a high performing team.
• Be inquisitive and want to understand our clients, their drivers and what matters to them, so that your advice has quality, imagination, and impact.
