Overview

Clerk to HM Judges role at HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS). Location: Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London. Salary £33,551 - £35,564. Working pattern: Full Time. This is a permanent civil service role (EO). There are multiple posts available.


Responsibilities

* Provide first line support to a Lord or Lady Justice of Appeal or High Court Judge by ensuring best use of the judge's time and enabling them to concentrate on delivering justice.
* Manage all aspects of the judge’s day, including administrative duties such as typing documents (including judgments or orders) and diary management.
* Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including legal representatives, members of the public and other members of the judiciary.
* Travel on circuit when required, including transporting books, bundles, files, computers, robes and other judicial requirements as well as the judge’s personal belongings.
* Maintain confidentiality, tact, courtesy and diplomacy in all interactions.


Working Arrangements

* Hours: actual pattern agreed with the judge and line manager. Normal week is 37 hours; longer hours may be required for specific situations. This role is not typically suitable for part-time, job sharing or frequent home working.
* Location: London-based with potential travel within England and Wales. When in London, base within the Royal Courts of Justice or nearby buildings.
* Circuit work: may require 2–6 weeks away, staying in judicial accommodation or hotels (at no cost to you). You will continue to manage the judge’s other commitments while on circuit.


Key Qualifications and Essential Skills

* Accurate typing speed minimum 35 wpm with assessments on entry.
* Strong IT skills with Microsoft Office.
* Excellent spoken and written English; ability to assimilate information and summarise it clearly in writing (tested before interview).


Desirable Skills

* Full driving licence


Security and Immigration

* Counter-Terrorism Check (CTC) and other national security vetting as required.
* Skilled Worker visa sponsorship: by 22 July 2025 the role may not be eligible for sponsorship unless certain conditions apply. Applicants must ensure right to work in the UK and comply with immigration rules.

* 250-word statements against each Success Profile Behaviour (Level 2): Communicating & Influencing, Making Effective Decisions, Delivering at Pace.
* Assessment day includes practical word processing and drafting tasks and a panel interview. Interviews may test the listed behaviours and two Strengths.


Essential and Desirable Criteria

* Essential: typing speed, IT proficiency, English proficiency, ability to draft and summarise accurately.
* Desirable: full driving licence.
