GMP Recruitment are proud to be working in partnership with a long-established and highly respected manufacturer within the engineering and foundry sector. We are currently recruiting on their behalf for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join the Engineering team on a full-time, permanent basis.
This is a day shift role, working Monday to Friday between 05:00 – 17:00, with 40 basic hours (staggered start/finish times). Due to the nature of the operation, flexibility for overtime and weekend working is required. Starting salary up to £35,000.
This role requires a high level of flexibility around working hours, including overtime and weekend working required. The successful candidate will work as a key member of the engineering team, supporting proactive planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities in a demanding foundry environment.
Mechanical Fitter – Main Responsibilities:
* Ensure a safe working environment at all times, complying fully with company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
* Carry out fault diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment within a heavy engineering foundry environment.
* Maintain and improve reliability and performance of foundry plant and ancillary equipment to minimise downtime and waste.
* Undertake routine PPM, reactive maintenance, and minor repair works as directed by the Engineering Manager and workflow plans.
* Install, inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical systems, machinery, and components including transmissions, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
* Diagnose and remedy faulty equipment to maintain safe operation and productivity, avoiding shutdowns and production losses.
* Carry out routine lubrication schedules and safety-related machinery checks.
* Support electrical and mechanical colleagues to complete planned and reactive maintenance tasks.
* Effect mechanical repairs using MIG welding, fabrication, bench fitting, and manual machining skills (lathe and vertical/horizontal milling).
* Assist the Engineering Manager with job timing, work scheduling, job plans, and work instructions.
* Identify defective or worn components and carry out repair, replacement, or modification work as required.
* Maintain engineering standards, world-class housekeeping, and orderly work areas at all times.
* Identify root causes of recurring faults and downtime, recommending improvements to optimise plant performance and OEE.
* Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, workshops, and discussions relating to quality, cost, delivery, and performance.
* Prepare and complete all required maintenance reports, checklists, and documentation accurately.
* Supervise and control subcontractors on site, ensuring permits to work, method statements, and company policies are adhered to.
* Assist in the development and ongoing improvement of PPM systems and maintenance schedules.
* Identify, maintain, and order critical spare parts, liaising with suppliers and stockists as required.
* Support Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality compliance across all engineering activities.
Mechanical Fitter – Required Skills and Experience:
* Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter within a heavy engineering, foundry, or industrial manufacturing environment (preferred).
* Strong mechanical fault-finding, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills.
* Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical transmissions, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and foundry machinery.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and proactive approach.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with operations personnel.
* Experience working to PPM schedules and responding effectively to reactive maintenance demands.
* Competence in welding, fabrication, and manual machining techniques.
* Strong awareness of Health & Safety standards, risk assessments, COSHH, and safe systems of work.
* Organised, disciplined, reliable, and committed to continuous improvement.
* Willingness to support engineering activities across two manufacturing sites.
