Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business.
We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.
Role purpose:
To work within the project team of designers and subcontractors to deliver safe and efficient designs that meet the project objectives. The design & detailing of civil engineering works & structures. To provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of civil permanent and temporary work designs Engage in bid development, tendering and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead & Design Delivery Manager.
What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
To undertake the design and co-ordination of civil engineering works required on projects from the initial feasibility assessment to detail design & installation.
Ensure the timely delivery and quality of designs including preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level which are compliant with the required client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
Key Responsibilities:
To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project. Including:
1. Drive a Safety by Design approach at all times.
2. The design & detailing of civil engineering structures including load analysis, concrete & steel designs, water retaining structures, roads, foundations & drainage.
3. Undertake check function for design calculations performed by other engineering colleagues.
4. Maintain compliance of CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of designs output by the team.
5. Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval as required / permitted by the Chief Engineer.
6. Work closely with other elements of the design team to ensure effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects.
7. Assist in the management of the tender process, understand & interpret scope of works, provide advice and opinion.
8. Ensure that Procedures and Manuals provided for compliance with the appropriate Quality Assurance Standards are applied.
9. Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the team.
10. Develop and implement policies, processes and procedures to support the continual improvement of the team.
11. Support in the advancement of the engineering design delivery for the team with particular focus on upskilling and use of software. Contribute to the development and updating of the design aids and computer programmes and assist in the analysis of new design concepts.
12. Support colleagues in managing the output and delivery of suitable design drawings.
13. Assist in determining team objectives, strategy and requirements.

Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
19. Degree or Masters level education (or equivalent) in Civil or Structural Engineering.
20. Chartered Engineer preferably with either the ICE or IStructE.
21. Skilled knowledge of the British Standard & Eurocode design codes.
22. Working knowledge and understanding of BS5975 would be beneficial.
23. Experience of the supervision of sub-consultants or sub-contractors
24. Proven experience of the design of civil engineering works.
25. Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or temporary works
26. Experience in the checking of permanent & temporary works for civil engineering projects
IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD)
