Main duties of the job This is an exciting opportunity to join the Paediatric sleep neurophysiology team in a band 6 role. You will be a RGPST qualified sleep physiologist and will deliver and analyse high quality sleep studies including actigraphy, videosomnography and polysomnography across a range of sleep disorders. You will work 3 weekday night shifts a month plus one Saturday day shift delivering multiple sleep latency testing. Training on procedures, policies, equipment and software will be provided. The Southampton Children’s Hospital specialist sleep service is one of only a handful of comprehensive paediatric sleep centres in the UK and services a large geographical area. The sleep neuro physiology team facilitates both home and inpatient sleep studies. You will report to the lead neuro sleep physiologist. We have a skill mix of professionals in our service including, neurology and sleep medicine consultants, sleep fellows, clinical nurse specialists, sleep physiologists and sleep practitioners. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities To provide a high standard of highly specialist Paediatric Sleep Studies for the Neuro-sleep physiology service to include as directed all aspects involved in the effective running of polysomnography, polysomnography with multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), videosomnography and actigraphy services within the clinical and research governance framework in both in-patient and out-patient settings. General Act as a patient advocate ensuring children’s rights are protected at all times. Deliver expert communication skills to impart complex, sensitive and at times, potentially distressing information in a simple manner, acting with tact and diplomacy to children/young people and their families, supporting them through diagnostics, and assessment to ensure informed decision making. Adapt communication to take into account complex medical needs and neurological developmental difficulties such as learning difficulties and autism. Develop skills in conflict resolution and negotiation skills when dealing with difficult or challenging situations. Facilitate sensitive and effective communication of complex study analysis with relevant clinical personnel (medical, nursing and administrative). Efficient time management of self, and in relation to other staff. Clinical Conduct to high standard specialist diagnostic inpatient and domiciliary sleep studies for children with complex needs (set up, parent training observation, download and complex data analysis to international RGPST standards), adhering to health and safety policies and SOPs Responsible for safe use and maintenance of expensive and highly complex specialist sleep study equipment with ordering of consumables Management Manage waiting lists and appointments for in-patient and domiciliary neuro-sleep studies, liaise with medical/nursing team about specialist needs of children and respond to parent and patient enquiries Actively participate in research activities, lead audit and quality improvement activities pertinent to role, update and develop standard operating procedures to ensure a high quality of care both at individual and service level. Maintain and update clinical databases, provide clinical effectiveness reports as required and ensure accurate record keeping adhering to patient confidentiality. Support the lead Specialist Clinical Physiologist where appropriate in leading the Paediatric Specialist Sleep Neurophysiology team in providing evidence based care to children/young people, day to day management such as e-health rostering of shifts, annual leave, sickness, and Individual Performance Reviews to facilitate individual professional development and to monitor the team’s individual statutory and mandatory training. Teaching & Education Maintain and develop professional knowledge and expertise and share with others including junior/new staff; clinical fellows (junior doctors) and contributing to the national Southampton Sleep training programme (www.piernetwork.org/education) Person specification Qualifications/training Requires Essential criteria Registered Polysomnographic technician (RPSGT) or equivalent BSc Biological or Physiological sciences of equivalent. Clinical competence in a sleep laboratory setting including PSG and MSLT set up, monitoring and analysis of studies in children Experience of maintenance and calibration of PSG equipment Good understanding of sleep physiology Child Protection and domestic violence awareness. Computer skills- data base and record keeping. Ability to safely move and handle patients and equipment. Desirable criteria Experience of recording and interpreting videosomnography and actigraphy sleep studies Experienced and competent in additional clinical skills as per job description. Post-graduate academic qualification e.g MSc or PhD BRPT registration Wider understanding of clinical sleep disorders e.g. Diploma in sleep medicine or attendance at relevant courses. Previous or relevant experience necessary Essential criteria Proven experience in a clinical sleep unit. Proven experience in a caring role involving children. Experience in a supervisory capacity Desirable criteria Evidence of organisational ability in other capacities Able to question appropriately. Able to recognise stress in self/others. Aptitudes And Skills Required Essential criteria Ability to communicate with a wide range of people in a variety of settings. Ability to work as part of a Multidisciplinary team. Ability to work independently, assessing and intervening as necessary to ensure patient safety. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to use initiative, prioritise and deliver agreed objectives Understanding of personal accountability. Ability to work with respiratory equipment and trouble shoot problems.
