Trainee Healthcare Scientist (Audiology) – Band 6

We are seeking a motivated individual to join the Audiology Team at United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals (ULTH).

The Audiology department at ULTH deliver high levels of diagnostic and rehabilitative care to patients across Lincolnshire. We provide a comprehensive audiology service, that includes hearing assessments, balance and tinnitus assessments and a full paediatric service, as well as supporting our ENT colleagues and the wider hospital.

This exciting new training post is a 3-year, fixed term Trainee Healthcare Scientist (STP) position with the department. You will be supported to complete an academic MSc qualification, and you will receive ongoing support from the Training Lead and the clinical team throughout your training.


Main duties of the job

You will become part of the technical team within the Audiology department, contributing to clinical support services within the hospital setting. You will have direct contact with patients of all ages and their families and be expected to liaise with the medical teams within the department.

You should have excellent communication skills, be innovative and flexible. This role would provide you with an excellent opportunity to consolidate your scientific knowledge and gain new clinical skills within a supportive, friendly environment.

Excellent interpersonal skills are a prerequisite, you will be expected to manage your time carefully and be able to prioritise conflicting demands, whilst working with a wide range of other professionals to provide a single pan-trust service which meets the needs of our patients.


About us

This is a Trust wide post that will be based at the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston. You will be expected to travel to attend courses / alternative hospital sites regularly throughout your training - in some cases this will involve overnight and /or residential stays.

Expected MSc university location – may be subject to change Aston University

Job responsibilities

Liaises with Liaises with other technical and scientific staff of department /section, and other Trainee Healthcare Scientists across a wide range of departments.

Key working relationships The trainee will work closely with the training coordinator/officer and more senior members of staff to follow the curriculum for the MSC Scientist Training Programme. The trainee will work in specified areas of the department and be responsible to the Designated Training Coordinator/Officer for their own work and progression through the scheme. All trainees will be expected to travel to national academic and other courses regularly throughout their training in some cases this may involve overnight and/or residential stays. Trainees will undertake a masters degree course at a designated academic institution specific for the training pathway. Trainees will be expected to rotate both through the host department, as well as through other local/regional/national scientific services, in order to complete the required pathway work‑based curricula. Trainees will be a part of a national training programme and will be registered with the National School of Healthcare Science based in the West Midlands Multi‑professional Workforce Deanery.

In conjunction with and supported by their designated Training Officer, the Trainee Healthcare Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme, for completing the learning outcomes as outlined in their curriculum (detailed in the Curriculum Library) progressing through a mixture of work‑based training activities and assessments and experiences in NHS scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic masters programme at the designated Higher Education Institution.

At all times the Trainee Healthcare Scientist is expected to work within standard operating policies and procedures of the host department and NHS organisation and adhere to high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk reduction, confidentiality, patient care and dignity, and respect for equality and diversity as set out in the NHS Constitution.

The Trainee Healthcare Scientist will be employed by the host department for a fixed term of 3 years, during which time they will work through a full‑time programme combining work‑based learning and a part‑time academic programme at masters (MSc) level.

The post holder will follow the curriculum as detailed on the National School of Healthcare Science website.

The trainee will undertake the full training programme in order to progress through the modules of the training scheme. In so doing they will learn how to perform and interpret clinical and specialist scientific processes underpinned by theoretical and applied knowledge and practical experience and will learn how to:

* Carry out complex scientific and clinical roles, including those working directly with patients.
* Analyse, interpret and compare investigative and clinical options.
* Make judgements, including clinical and differential judgements, involving complicated facts or situations that impact on patients.
* Initiate and undertake innovation, improvement and R&D and be involved in the education of healthcare science trainees and other learners in the workplace.
* Complete all work‑based training and assessment alongside the academic masters course to exit the programme with eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and use of the protected title of Clinical Scientist.
* Communicate complex technical, scientific and sensitive information to colleagues within their department in both verbal and written forms.
* Meet the HCPCs standards for training, professional skills, behaviour and health.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Applicants must have a 1st or 2.1 either in an undergraduate honours degree or an integrated master's degree, in a pure or applied science subject relevant to the specialty for which they are applying.
* Applicants with a 2.2 honours degree or better in any subject will also be considered if they have a higher degree that is relevant to the specialty for which they are applying.
* Applicants for reconstructive science posts (maxillofacial prosthetics) must hold current registration as a dental technician with the General Dental Council.
* In‑service applicants may submit an application where they do not hold the above degree requirements but are able to fulfil further requirements outlined on the NSHCS website.
* For all candidates evidence of research experience, e.g. in the form of a higher degree or equivalent evidence of scientific and academic capability, is considered desirable.


Scientific Skills

* A committed, in‑depth interest in scientific practice and its application to direct clinical care of patients in a clinical environment.
* Ability to design research investigations and experiments.
* Ability to analyse and assess scientific, technical and medical literature.
* Ability to make judgements, including clinical judgements involving facts or situations that impact on patients.
* Understanding of quality control and management assurance in a science or work based context.
* Ability to develop proficiency in the performance of routine and complex techniques currently in use, following Standard Operating Procedures accurately, and the ability to develop and validate new techniques.
* Ability to identify problems associated with scientific equipment, inappropriate testing, incompatible results and to investigate these, plan corrective action confirming appropriateness with senior colleagues and follow up.
* Ability to use, maintain and troubleshoot scientific equipment.
* Understanding of the role of their chosen specialty in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare setting.
* Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
* Ability to analyse complex information comprising laboratory or workshop data, images and clinical details.
* Knowledge acquired through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgements.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both writing and speaking in English language.
* Can explain analytical, scientific and clinical aspects of the work to a variety of people including scientific colleagues, clinical professionals, service managers and patients, and to listen to their needs.
* Can make formal presentations to groups of colleagues.
* Good active listening skills to build rapport with the listener to encourage an open discussion.
* Self‑aware and flexible enough to adopt a range of evaluative or empathising listening styles according to the needs of the listener and the situation.
* Ability to work autonomously in the planning and execution of their own work and under the guidance of their Departmental Supervisors.
* Flexibility to acquire the skills to organise, plan and monitor the workload of others.
* Demonstrable ability to lead others.
* Under guidance develops good interpretative skills in the formulation of advice to multi‑disciplinary team members on diagnosis and appropriate treatment of patients.

* Demonstrates values and principles of the NHS Constitution as a whole with a focus on patient centred care.


Personal Requirements

* Ability to perform a wide range of duties according to the Job Description.
* Highly developed coordination skills with good dexterity and hand‑eye coordination and those skills required for the performance of fine analytical techniques.
* Ability to meet the travel requirements of the training role and the clinical rotations.
