The Role
We are recruiting a junior/graduate mechanical engineer to join the team. As a mechanical engineer, you will be responsible for mechanical and product design to support the development of our product portfolio incorporating elements including cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, and optoelectronics. You will work in a cross-disciplinary team which includes quantum photonic engineers, mechanical engineers, optical physicists alongside business developers, and product designers. The successful candidate will be involved in both internal research and development projects delivering technical support in mechanical design as well as involved in developing custom solutions for customers.
Responsibilities
1. Collaborate with senior engineers to conceptualize and develop mechanical designs, ensuring adherence to project specifications and industry standards
2. Build, assemble, and test new designs and systems
3. Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings for various mechanical components and systems
4. Conduct thorough analysis and simulations to assess the structural integrity, functionality, and performance of designed prototypes, making necessary adjustments for optimization
5. Participate in design reviews, communicate with cross-functional teams, and contribute innovative ideas to enhance overall product design and development processes
6. Specialize in cryogenic design by selecting appropriate materials and thermal insulation techniques for components, ensuring the mechanical integrity and performance of systems

We are developing high-performance systems which utilize our proprietary sources of quantum light and hybrid photonic platforms to deliver new capabilities in quantum computing. Our offices and labs are located at the Sheffield Technology Park, which is within minutes of walking from the Sheffield train station, central public transport interchange, and has secure bike storage and car parking.
Requirements
2:1 or above in an engineering discipline and/or 0-2 years industrial experience
Proficient in the use of Solidworks or Autodesk AutoCAD/Inventor in both 2D and 3D
Experience of the product design lifecycle from initial specification capture to concept designs through to a finished product
Experience working with external manufacturing partners
Experience in design for manufacture
Excellent problem-solving skills
Highly motivated self-starter with exceptional organizational skills
Proven ability to rapidly accumulate new expertise
Experience in developing reliable structural systems including thermal, mechanical, and vibrational management
Comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment
Eligible to work in the UK
Ideal candidates would also have experience in the following:
* Product design and conformance
* Knowledge of high-vacuum systems and their design and manufacture
* Experience in developing and operating closed-loop cryogenic systems
