Job Overview
ELFT is recruiting a consultant psychiatrist to fill a 1 FTE post covering maternity leave within our recently redesigned community mental health service. The role is based at the Well Street Common community clinic, providing a holistic and assertive service for working‑age adults with severe mental illness in an outstanding CQC‑rated Trust.
Main Duties
The consultant psychiatrist will deliver clinical leadership to the South‑East Community Mental Health Service, manage a multidisciplinary team of senior staff, and provide advice and training to general practitioners. Key responsibilities include:
* Leading and developing the Mental Health Team, which comprises band 7 senior workers (senior nurses or social workers), band 6 nurses and social workers, community connectors & support workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, and peer‑support workers.
* Co‑ordinating care with a band 8 team manager and ARRS workers who operate across GP surgeries and community mental health settings.
* Providing clinical supervision, risk assessment, and evidence‑based treatment for psychosis, mood disorders and comorbidities.
* Advocating best practice in the application of the Mental Health Act and championing recovery‑informed service delivery.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential Criteria
* Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent.
* Fully registered with the General Medical Council.
* Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT).
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with RCPsych Guidelines).
* Approved Clinician status (MHA 2007) or eligibility for it.
* Experience of clinical work in general adult psychiatry at ST4–6 or consultant level during the last three years.
* Experience and knowledge of psychopharmacology.
* Experience in adult psychiatric community services.
* Excellent working knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
* Understanding of social aspects relevant to psychiatry.
* Expertise in risk assessment and the use of evidence‑based interventions.
* Experience in teaching and supervising junior medical staff and non‑medical mental health professionals.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to manage complex workloads and support others to do so.
* Commitment to working with service users in ongoing service development.
* Commitment to continuing professional development.
* Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with a diverse population.
* Physical ability to travel between sites as required.
Desirable Criteria
* Higher degree in a relevant area.
* Knowledge and experience of recovery‑informed service delivery and working with patients as experts by experience.
* Medical education qualification.
* Interest in supervising research, audit or QI projects and a record of published research.
* Management, performance and leadership courses.
