An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Emergency Nurse / Care Practitioner team on a 12 month secondment. This is a band 6 training post that will develop your skills in the assessment and management of minor injuries and illnesses to enable independent working as a band 6 emergency practitioner.

We are looking for an experienced emergency care professional with exemplary clinical practice skills, who has a dynamic and enthusiastic manner. The post holder is required to work all shifts flexibly across both sites and who is interested in developing autonomously within the field of urgent care and ideally has experience in managing minor injuries.

Please note that this role is a secondment opportunity. Before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current line manager. Secondments can’t be agreed without your current manager’s approval. If you are unable to gain your managers approval you should refrain from applying unless you wish to take this role as a fixed term position.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part ENP/ECP team to support the provision of delivering effective and safe care in the ED/UTC. Under direct and indirect supervision, you will learn to assess, treat and diagnose both paediatric and adult patients presenting to the ED/UTC with minor injuries and illnesses.

We specialise in the management of minor injuries and are committed to delivering the highest standard of care for our patients, meeting regularly to maintain and develop our skills, as well as imparting this to the wider departmental team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Under direct and indirect supervision, you will learn to assess, treat and diagnose both paediatric and adult patients presenting to the ED/UTC with minor injuries and illnesses.
2. Deliver exceptional care ensuring patients are fully involved in the design and implementation of their treatment plans.
3. To ensure effective coordination and liaison with multidisciplinary teams in order to provide a seamless service to the patients and their carers, and prevent hospital admission where urgent care is required.
4. To refer appropriately in-house to senior ENP/ECP's, UTC GP’s or Emergency Department doctors where a second opinion is required.
5. To be a source of clinical expertise to less experienced staff within the department.
6. To delegate duties/tasks to other members of staff where appropriate.
7. Provide specialist advice relating to minor injury and/or illness to local healthcare teams, patients, relatives and carers. To design and implement a tailored package of care utilising specialist knowledge in minor injuries and illness.
8. Utilising specified specialist care pathways such as referral to fracture clinic, hand therapy services, plastics and burns unit.
9. Competent in the use and development of clinical protocols and guidelines such as PGDs (Patient Group Directives) to improve service delivery and patient experience.
10. To undertake a variety of complex interventions and procedures, according to personal competence including, but not limited to; application of upper and lower limb casts and splints. Suturing of heads, limbs and hands. Reduction and manipulation of fractures and dislocations. Venepuncture and cannulation.
11. Ability to work under pressure in a busy and challenging environment with need to consistently review and address clinical priorities.

Qualifications / Experience

Essential criteria

12. Active registration with Nursing/ Paramedic regulatory body
13. First degree in Nursing/Paramedic or health related subject or equivalent level of experience.
14. Significant experience in emergency care and currently holds/previously and recently held band 6 or senior band 5 position in emergency care.
15. Experience in triage
16. Understanding and competence in the theoretical and practical management of minor injuries including fractures, burns, wounds, minor eye injuries, soft tissue injuries.
17. Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and willingness to participate in CPD.
18. Mentorship course
19. PGD Trained
20. Evidence of initiating Departmental Service improvements
21. Experience in minor injury management
22. Evidence of interest in role/minor injury/working autonomously/at advanced level
23. Post Graduate certificate Emergency Nursing / Trauma (or similar)

Desirable criteria

24. IRMER NMR training
25. X-ray interpretation training
26. Significant experience with children
27. Experience of autonomous clinical decision making
28. Evidence of independent study in minor injury and illness.
29. Evidence of university accredited qualification in minor injury/illness
30. University accredited qualifications in minor injury, minor illness, physical assessment.
31. Wound care competency
32. Competence in the application of splints e.g. upper and lower limb casts
33. Experience in autonomous clinical decision making
