As Director of Economy and Skills, you will lead the city’s economic development agenda, driving inward investment, business growth, skills, and cultural place strategies. This pivotal role will ensure Birmingham realises its full potential as a thriving, inclusive, and globally competitive city. You will champion the city’s Economy and Place Strategy, overseeing key regeneration zones, aligning skills with business needs, and strengthening Birmingham’s cultural, sporting and tourism offer. Working with partners locally and nationally, you will unlock investment, improve opportunities for residents, and position Birmingham as a leading destination for business, talent, and visitors. Duties and Responsibilities Lead the delivery of Birmingham’s Economy and Place Strategy, ensuring clear outcomes for growth, investment, skills, and culture. Drive inward investment and regeneration across the city’s Enterprise Zone, Investment Zone, and East Birmingham Inclusive Growth Zone, securing maximum social, financial, and environmental impact. Oversee the city’s adult skills and employment strategy, with a focus on tackling youth unemployment and supporting residents in the most deprived communities. Champion Birmingham’s cultural, sporting, and tourism offer, strengthening the city’s global profile and maximising the visitor economy. Build strong relationships with businesses, investors, developers, and partners including the West Midlands Combined Authority, Homes England, and Government departments. Act as the Council’s lead representative at major events and forums, promoting Birmingham’s ambitions for inclusive growth and investment. Provide strategic oversight of city centre management, working with Business Improvement Districts to deliver the city’s future growth plans. Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing team, embedding a culture of accountability, innovation, and measurable delivery. Work closely with Cabinet Members, senior officers, and Commissioners to provide expert advice, briefings, and assurance on economic growth, skills, and cultural strategies. Collaborate across directorates to align economic, skills, cultural, and regeneration initiatives with Birmingham’s wider corporate priorities, including climate, housing, transport, and wellbeing.
