Mechanical Technician – Contract Opportunity (Abingdon, 12‑Month Contract, Inside IR35)
We’re seeking a hands‑on Mechanical Technician to support major shutdown and maintenance programmes on complex mechanical systems within a world‑class engineering and research facility. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly skilled team delivering critical installation, maintenance and upgrade work across vacuum, cooling, pressurised and electro‑magnetic systems.
Responsibilities
* Support large‑scale shutdown and intervention activities.
* Carry out mechanical assembly, maintenance, fault finding and repairs.
* Assist with installation and commissioning of new systems.
* Produce maintenance and testing documentation, work packs and safe systems of work.
* Support complex engineering projects including cooling systems and in‑vessel works.
* Supervise fitters, contractors and junior craft personnel where required.
* Maintain high safety standards and support continuous improvement initiatives.
* Work within regulated environments and adhere to CDM Regs.
Qualifications
* Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship or equivalent Level3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
* Experience within an industrial mechanical assembly and maintenance environment.
* Strong understanding of safe systems of work, RAMS and method statements.
* Ability to work independently on technically challenging tasks.
* Desirable: experience with vacuum systems; exposure to cooling or pressurised systems.
* Basic understanding of electrical/mechanical interface work.
* Knowledge of modern manufacturing techniques.
