Alcohol Clinical Nurse Specialist - 12 months
Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist position focusing on addiction treatment and care.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated professional with an interest in addiction and a passion for improving the care of patients with substance misuse issues.
The CNS will use their knowledge and experience to holistically assess patients who are in hospital and have issues with drugs, alcohol, or both, developing therapeutic relationships and providing advice, motivational support, and appropriate referrals to internal and external services.
Main duties of the job
The CNS will be responsible for assessing patients who misuse a variety of substances, providing health education and psychosocial interventions. They will manage a caseload of patients supported pre‑ and post‑detox, responding to patients attending hospital frequently for various reasons.
Job responsibilities
* Promote systematic alcohol screening of A&E and ward patients using harm minimisation principles and tools such as AUDIT.
* Provide specialist assessment, liaison, and clinical advice on alcohol dependence and treatment options, including prescribing.
* Deliver evidence‑based interventions tailored to patients’ psychological, social, and medical needs, considering carers and community.
* Coordinate care for complex or high‑risk cases until transfer to specialist services.
* Implement risk management protocols, monitor referrals and outcomes, and facilitate appropriate onward referrals for longer‑term support such as detoxification or therapy.
* Support supervision and training of colleagues, promote reflective practice, and contribute to quality and safety initiatives.

Experience
* Post‑registration experience in a relevant clinical specialty.
* Experience contributing to effective care and discharge planning.
* Recent post‑basic experience with alcohol issues.
* Experience advising on detoxification or medication regimes.
* Experience in clinical audit or research projects.
* Experience managing a team of staff.
* Experience in a range of clinical specialties.
Skills

* Post‑registration qualification or training in the relevant clinical specialty.
* Teaching and assessing qualification e.g. SLIP.
* Non‑medical prescribing qualification or a commitment to undertake the course within an agreed timescale with Managers.
