Overview

St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Occupational Therapist to work within the Wandsworth Community Neuro Team in SW London. The closing date is 05 October 2025.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced Occupational Therapist to work within Wandsworth Community Neuro Team, a well-established and respected team in SW London.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the assessment and treatment of adults with a variety of neurological conditions. The service also covers Early Supported Discharge (ESD) for stroke patients, groups, splint clinic and vocational rehabilitation. There is a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary working especially within service development and team learning. The MDT team includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, dietician, clinical neuropsychologist, clinical nurse specialist, complex case manager, psychology, admin and rehabilitation assistants.

As a skilled therapist the post holder will have a lead role in the development of the Occupational Therapy service within the multi-disciplinary teams, and will also have a key role in the overall neuro rehab service development. As a senior therapist, you will also be responsible for line managing and clinically supervising Band 6 Occupational Therapists.

Continuing professional development is actively supported via clinical supervision, annual Personal Development Plans, post-graduate and in-service training from a uni-professional and multi-disciplinary point of view. Supervision of students is actively encouraged. All our staff are fully supported by the Clinical Team Leader.


Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the management of a caseload of adults with a wide range of neurological disorders offering specialist community and out-patient rehabilitation.

To assess own caseload of patients including those with a complex and highly complex social, psychological, communication, and cognitive presentation, make a diagnosis, and to develop and deliver individualised Occupational Therapy treatment programmes using evidence based practice, working towards client’s goals. This often involves working as a lone clinician.

To be responsible for line managing and clinically supervising Band 6 Occupational Therapists, as well as providing clinical education to students on placement.

To take a key role in the future development of the multi disciplinary service.

To work as an autonomous practitioner within the standards of professional practice laid down by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and Healthcare Professions Council, and be developing increasing responsibility for leading others and the Service, whilst themselves participating in regular supervision.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* Graduate Diploma / BSc/ Post Graduate Degree in Occupational Therapy/MSc
* Registered with Health Professions Council
* Evidence of relevant in depth postgraduate study or qualification
* Member of British Association of Occupational Therapists
* Training in management and/or leadership skills
* Member of a relevant professional specialist section


Experience

* Post graduate experience in neuro rehab
* Experience in working in any of the following areas: general medicine, acute, in-patient or community neuro-rehab, older people\'s rehab
* Experience of developing junior occupational therapy and other staff through CPD / PDP/ clinical supervision
* Experience of utilising standardised cognitive assessments
* Experience of working as part of an occupational therapy team and/or multi disciplinary team
* Experience of working with support workers
* Experience of audit
* Supervision of Students
* Experience in Community Working


Skills

* Required to work at masters level or equivalent in terms of knowledge, training and experience
* Competent basic splinting skills
* Ability to teach specific occupational therapy treatment packages to patients / carers / others
* Effective communication skills in a multi-disciplinary setting
* Good organisation and time-management skills
* Ability to lead, develop, and motivate others
* Drive and enthusiasm for clinical excellence using EBP and clinical networks
* Able to manage own time and caseload, balance management and clinical work
* Excellent computer skills e.g. Microsoft office (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook)
* Advanced splinting skills


Knowledge

* In depth knowledge of community neuro-rehab
* Comprehensive knowledge of equipment and minor adaptations
* Understanding of community issues and services available
* Wheelchair prescription
* To be competent in handling the mental, emotional and psycho-social aspects of working in Community Neuro-rehab
* To be familiar with relevant legislation relating to the care of clients with neurological conditions.
* Appreciation of changes in health and social care provision
* Understanding of Continuing Healthcare
* Knowledge of Equality Act 2010 Understanding of return to work process

* To demonstrate use of initiative Highly motivated
* Flexible and able to cope with change
