Senior / Lead Power Electronics Engineer
Join to apply for the Senior / Lead Power Electronics Engineer role at NewOrbit Space
NewOrbit Space is engineering the lowest orbiting satellites on Earth to rapidly advance global connectivity and insight.
We are building satellites that can breathe air and operate at an altitude of just 200 km. Thanks to our proprietary propulsion system we can compensate for atmospheric drag at ultra low altitudes using the air as propellant, and thus operate sustainably without relying on traditional propellants.
Through our satellites, humanity will benefit from improved satellite imagery, direct-to-phone internet, and a self-cleaning orbit free from space debris.
Your Role:
We are seeking an experienced Senior / Lead Power Electronics Engineer to help us design, build and test power systems for satellites. You\'ll be part of a team leading our development efforts. You are expected to lead the entire power electronics development process—from concept to deployment—directly contributing to the success of our satellite launch.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and prototype advanced power electronics circuits and PCB layouts.
* Develop DC-DC and DC-AC converters, power conditioners, and other power supplies for inductively coupled plasma sources.
* Conduct modelling, control design, and stability analysis for power electronic converters.
* Test and validate power converters against simulations, considering EMI/EMC, reliability, and efficiency.
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate power electronics into various satellite subsystems.
* Education: Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
* Experience: At least 3 years of experience in power electronics design (including academic research, e.g., PhD).
* Strong fundamental knowledge of analogue and digital circuits.
* Proficiency in tools such as CST/Maxwell/COMSOL, LTSpice, TINA-TI, MATLAB/Simulink.
* Experience with multiple converter topologies (DC/DC, class E and class D inverters).
Preferred Experience (a plus, but not required)
* High-voltage power electronics (up to 5kV).
* Thermal modelling and electro-magnetics (design, test, and simulation).
* Development of power electronics for wireless power transfer systems, radio frequency generators, etc.
* Reliability analysis, including stress analysis and FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis).
* Control architectures, algorithms, and power control for converters and drives.
* EMI/EMC compliance, control theory, and closed-loop feedback systems.
* Equity and competitive salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes. Dedication and hard work are rewarded with a stake in the business you are helping to build.
* Pioneering Space Technology: Join NewOrbit and contribute to launching groundbreaking technology into space next year.
* Unmatched ownership and impact: You\'ll experience a level of input that\'s rare in this industry. You\’ll participate in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development.
Note: This is an on-site, five-days-a-week role based in Reading (20 minutes from London). We provide a financial relocation package, and also sponsor your visa if you\'re based abroad.
