Principal Clinical Scientist (MRI Physics)

This MRI & US Physics team at Barts Health support the Radiology MRI service, and is composed of four other full-time MRI physicists, one US physicist and two specialist INIR STP trainees.

This permanent position is an exciting opportunity for a talented state registered clinical scientist to join the team and support our ongoing work in MRI, with a particular focus for protocol development in cancer imaging, incorporating AI methods.

Radiology currently has 10 MRI scanners (including a dedicated research scanner) across five hospitals with a further scanner due this year.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are underrepresented within Barts Health at this band.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder will act as Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) and support both the clinical service and clinical research, including supporting clinical trials and developing novel research projects.

The MRI physics team prides itself in its research activities and has a strong research portfolio in acquisition and analysis of speech imaging. They would also be encouraged to develop their own research interests. We have ongoing collaborations with most Institutes of the Barts Medical School and other QMUL departments.

Barts Clinical Physics takes an active role in the STP scheme and the post-holder will actively participate in the INIR training at Barts Health.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
* Relevant MSc or higher degree
* PhD or equivalent experience in
* MR Safety Expert


Experience

* Advanced experience in the field of MRI Physics
* Experience of supporting translating innovation in Clinical Protocols/Procedures
* Proven experience of building and working in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders.
* Experience of effective collaboration with leaders of other health and care disciplines
* Demonstrable evidence of understanding and experience of professional leadership


Knowledge

* In depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines in MRI and U/S Physics
* Highly advanced theoretical and practical expert knowledge of MRI Physics and extensive experience in the field of MRI This includes the knowledge required to act as an MRSE in a complex Trust
* High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure and staff error
* High Level of understanding of Risk Assessment and Risk Management processes and techniques with significant experience in carrying these out


Skills

* Able to prioritise and manage own work
* Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence
* Able to communicate complex information at postgraduate level to other professional groups
* Able to train groups of other professional staff
* Able to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects
* Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations
* Able to support building and leading teams and work effectively as part of a team
* Able to present scientific papers at national and international conferences
