Job Description
The Shift engineer will provide essential engineering expertise to support Operations in reducing and eliminating downtime. This role involves both proactive and reactive maintenance.
Working Hours
Monday to Friday nights, 22:00-06:00
Salary
Up to £50,000 per annum (DOE)
Responsibilities
* Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on production equipment.
* Identify and resolve potential issues before they cause failures.
* Respond rapidly to machinery breakdowns, diagnose problems, and perform repairs or report to the engineering team leader if external specialists are required.
* Carry out machine adjustments, size changes, and machine settings when modifications are made to support production function.
* Monitor and calibrate equipment to ensure accuracy, quality, and safe standards are met.
* Keep accurate records of maintenance (e.g., PPM schedules, shift reporting).
* Adhere to health & safety guidelines and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
* May be involved with project work to bring equipment back to standard, assisting production performance figures.
* Familiar with maintaining packing equipment would be an advantage:
o Experience of pneumatics
o Horizontal flow packers
o Vertical form fill baggers
o Carton erectors
o Multi-Heads
o Gluing systems
o Metal detectors / check weighers
o X‑ray
o Various bespoke hand packing / labeling lines with printers
Qualifications
* Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems – prefer electrical bias.
* Experience in a food/manufacturing environment is desirable but not essential.
* Experience in food packaging is an advantage but not essential.
* Understanding of food safety and hygiene is preferred.
* Good practice of health & safety.
* Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing industrial machinery (baggers, multi‑heads, conveyors, packaging equipment).
* Proactive approach to maintenance and commitment to ensuring high equipment reliability.
* Ability to train and develop colleagues when required.
* Good communication skills and the ability to make decisions on the spot.
* Ability to work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
