Job Overview
A compassionate, knowledgeable and motivated Pharmacy Assistant is required to join the friendly team at HMP Portland. The role is part of the prison pharmacy service (OPS) and offers NHS AfC employment (including pension) in a forward‑thinking environment that encourages career and personal development.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage day‑to‑day stock control: ordering, receiving, storing and computer input of pharmaceutical products.
* Dispense clinically screened prescriptions and weekly/monthly in‑possession medication to patients.
* Act as the second checker for controlled drug administration at Meds hatches and in the healthcare department.
* Carry out regular stock checks, expiry date checks and monitoring procedures (e.g., logging fridge and ambient temperatures).
* Ensure medicines are sourced, handled and recorded in accordance with GDP, departmental SOPs and Trust guidelines.
* Return medicines from clinical areas to stock or dispose of them safely, following GDP and Trust procedures.
* Support procurement activities: place orders, chase receipt of goods, query discrepancies, and maintain accurate records.
* Serve as the first point of contact for telephone queries and staff visiting the department, referring where appropriate according to SOPs.
* Communicate with external regulatory bodies and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislation, including GDP, Trust financial procedures and WDL information.
* Undergo a level‑2 prison security check (in addition to standard NHS recruitment checks).
Key Qualifications & Requirements
* NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (preferred); applicants with relevant healthcare experience will be considered for NVQ 2 training by Oxleas.
* Willingness to undertake National Security Vetting.
* Proof of right to work, photographic ID, and proof of address (5‑year history).
* Non‑UK passport holders must provide valid right‑to‑work documents and a Home Office Share chain.
* Applicants who are non‑UK passport holders with less than 5 years of UK address history must also provide a police certificate in English.
* Applicants who are UK passport holders who have lived abroad for more than six months in the last three years must provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English.
