Working Style: Your workstyle will be a mobile hybrid worker in this role which gives you the flexibility to work from home and from a variety of Council workplaces.
We are currently seeking a qualified and motivated Health and Safety professional to join our professional and friendly Corporate Health and Safety Team as a Health and Safety Officer.
This role is ideal for someone who holds a NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and is passionate about influencing positive health and safety outcomes across a large, diverse organisation.
The Health and Safety Team plays a vital role in enabling the Council to deliver services safely, legally and effectively across a wide range of activities, from frontline services to major construction projects. As a corporate function, the team works with services across the Authority, supporting managers and employees to manage risk proportionately while continually strengthening our health, safety and wellbeing culture. You’ll be joining a professional, supportive team that values partnership working, practical solutions and continuous improvement.
As a Health and Safety Officer, you will provide professional advice, guidance and support to managers and employees on the effective management of health and safety. While the role may predominantly support specific service areas, including Social Services, you will work as part of a corporate team, providing cover and support across other Directorates as required.
Your daily routine will include:
1. Providing information, advice and guidance on health and safety matters
2. Carrying out health and safety audits, inspections and safety tours
3. Investigating workplace accidents, incidents and near misses
4. Advising on risk assessments and safe systems of work
5. Preparing and presenting health and safety reports to meetings and committees
6. Working collaboratively with managers, stakeholders and trade unions
About you:
Do you have:
7. A NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent)
8. Experience working as a Health and Safety practitioner within a complex or multi‑disciplinary organisation
9. Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and effective safety management practices
10. Experience of conducting audits, inspections and incident investigations
11. The ability to provide clear, practical advice to managers and employees
12. Confidence presenting information at meetings, committees or forums
13. Strong written and verbal communication skills
14. Experience using standard IT systems (e.g. Microsoft applications)
