Perform basic lung function/sleep procedures in a variety of clinical settings

Assist in performance of specialised lung function/sleep procedures

Calibrate and quality control equipment required to perform basic lung function procedures

Technical reporting of Lung Function/sleep

Assist with training and supervision of less experienced staff

Support paediatric asthma community diagnostic centre(s) around Birmingham

Support the departments sleep service and the role will require overnight work on our inpatient sleep service.

To create a child friendly environment to enable children to feel relaxed in a clinical setting and thus obtain optimal clinically reliable results


Main duties of the job

The post holder will have knowledge in Respiratory Physiology through formal or informal training and able to competently perform Spirometry, Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) and bronchodilator reversibility to an ARTP standard. The candidate is expected to be able to perform gas transfer or working towards this.

Autonomously perform spirometry, FeNO and bronchodilator reversibility in outpatient clinic within the Trust and Paediatric asthma CDC in the community.

The post holder will be expected to perform test to the current standard guideline for the measurement of lung function, recommended bythe Association of Respiratory Technicians and Physiologists (ARTP); American Thoracic Society, NICE and the British Thoracic Society (BTS).

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Experience in Spirometry, FeNO and bronchodilator reversibility
* Experience in basic Lung Function tests
* 3 GCSEs at Level 4 or above including Mathematics & English
* ARTP Spirometry Certificate (training will be provided if needed to achieve this level)
* NVQ3 or equivalent in relevant subject e.g. Anatomy & Physiology


Knowledge

* Evidence of working with children
* Awareness of issues around confidentiality and handling of clinical information
* Practical experience in a using a range of diagnostic test equipment for clinical investigations including recognition of basic faults, calibration and quality control issues
* Knowledge of quality and infection control protocols.


Communication

* Good customer care skills Strong sense of customer focus Must be presentable in terms of dress - badge provided (and uniform where applicable) Must be professional, punctual and reliable
* Ability to communicate and engage with children of all ages where persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills are required to obtain maximum cooperation and ensure the collection of accurate diagnostic/monitoring data.
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Desire to learn new skills and knowledge


Analytical

* Competent to accurately measure and interpret dynamic lung volumes (training will be provided if needed to achieve this level)


Skills

* Ability to concentrate on complex data and calculations for extended periods.
* Able to work without direct supervision.
* Competent in use of IT systems including Microsoft Office packages
* Desire to learn new skills and knowledge


Resources

* Ability to maintain equipment resources and order as required.
