Consultant in Orthogeriatrics

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) are looking to appoint a Consultant in Orthogeriatrics to join our established team. The Orthogeriatric Service at Harrogate District Hospital provides consultant-led care for older people with frailty admitted with trauma or requiring orthopaedic surgery. The service is an integral part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic pathway and focuses on peri-operative optimisation, comprehensive geriatric assessment and safe, timely discharge.
The service is delivered by two Consultant Orthogeriatricians, supported by Trauma Coordinators and resident doctors, working closely with Trauma & Orthopaedics, Anaesthetics, nursing teams, therapists and community services. The Orthogeriatric team contributes to multidisciplinary working, teaching, audit and service development in support of improved outcomes for older patients.
Main duties of the job
* Clinical care of older people with frailty on the orthopaedic ward.
* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
* Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
* To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
* Option to take part in General Medicine on-call rota.
Qualifications
* CCT date or within 6 months of CCT.
* Success in intercollegiate Speciality Examination or equivalent.
Experience
* Significant experience of working with frail older adults in acute hospital settings.
* Significant experience in the assessment and management of older people with complex comorbidities.
Knowledge
* In-depth knowledge of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and its application to frail older adults with acute orthopaedic trauma, including hip fracture care.
* Completed Fellowship Programme.
