Job Description


The salary for this role is £77,239 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role can be based at any of the following sites: Culham, Oxfordshire.

Please note that there will be a requirement for domestic and international travel on a regular basis.

This role requires employees to be eligible for SC Clearance (must have resided in the UK for the last 5 years), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Fusion Safety Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the development of the UK and international regulatory framework for future fusion power plant. You will also provide technical fusion safety expertise to DESNZ and enable fusion familiarisation for Regulatory Bodies and the IAEA. The team also is a key player with domestic and international fusion groups and companies in areas of fusion safety, security and environment.

The job holder will be recognised as a subject matter expert internationally and provide technical and strategic guidance, managing activities relating to the development of fusion safety, security and environmental regulation both domestically and internationally. This will include working with government, regulatory bodies, international organisations such as IAEA and industry, major working groups as required on the development of strategic and technical fusion safety documentation.

Additional Responsibilities:

* Enable regulatory familiarisation and training in fusion by providing site visits and subject matter expert presentations
* Team leader responsible for motivation, performance and project completion.

* Proactively foster engagement with other fusion organisations and regulatory bodies, both in the UK and internationally, to influence and support the harmonisation of fusion safety regulation.
* Guide technical review of safety documents as requested, where fusion specific expertise is required.
* Present at domestic and international conferences and seminars.

Qualifications


Essential Requirements:

* Advanced degree level Science or Engineering Qualification (or equivalent experience).
* Good working knowledge of the nuclear, radiological and high hazard health and safety, regulatory framework, legislation and guidance.
* Experience of participation in regulatory interactions, at a technical or strategic level.
* Working collaboratively and influencing, while proactively seeking diverse input from others in the national and international fusion safety community
* Being a dynamic and inspirational leader, setting direction and prioritising in an agile manner, engaging people in an approachable and inclusive way.

Desirable Requirements:

* Experience in the production of safety case standards, procedures and guidance.
* Displaying a passion for seeking innovative ways of approaching fusion safety, security and environment, that are proportionate to the hazards and challenges of fusion.
* The ability to interpret technical information for a non-safety specialist audience, in written reports and in presentations, and communicating with impact at all levels.
