Scientific Leader, Bioinformatics Engineering
Do you share a desire to advance scientific knowledge and capitalize on the revolution in data, automation, and predictive sciences to deliver measurable impacts on GSK’s medicine discovery portfolio?
The Data, Automation and Predictive Sciences (DAPS) function of GSK Research Technologies focuses on large-scale data generation, curation, analysis, and prediction to deliver higher PTRS (Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success) assets and achieve upper quartile ambitions.
Collaboration is key, as DAPS will succeed through close partnership with teams within Research Technologies, Research Units (all therapeutic areas), Onyx Research Data Platform (Tech/IT), R&D AIML, and Risk & Compliance.
As a Scientific Leader in Bioinformatics Engineering within the Data Sciences team, aligned to Target Discovery and Human Genetics & Genomics, you will collaborate with scientists across Research Technologies to develop and deliver high-quality, impactful bioinformatics solutions. Your focus will be on providing bioinformatics solutions to produce high-value, harmonized multi-modal omics data assets at an industrial scale for use across the medicine discovery portfolio.
This position is based 2-3 days per week at a GSK R&D site in the USA (Upper Providence, PA), the UK (Stevenage), or Germany (Heidelberg).
This role offers the opportunity to lead key activities that will advance your career, including:
1. Architecting and delivering complex, end-to-end bioinformatics workflows for large-scale, automated, and reproducible analyses of genetic, cellular imaging, and multi-omics data, to generate insights that inform decision-making.
2. Designing, developing, testing, and enhancing robust, scalable, cloud-native bioinformatics solutions for analysis and interpretation of genetics, omics, and imaging data on GSK’s Onyx Research Data Platform.
3. Leading a team of bioinformatics and data science professionals, responsible for skills and capability development, career growth, and performance management.
4. Collaborating across departments with scientists developing novel methods, and with data and software engineers to mature methodologies into production-quality pipelines.
5. Contributing to a culture of innovation, quality, and continuous learning, including mentoring team members and evaluating new bioinformatics technologies for potential application at GSK.
6. Understanding disease data landscapes (e.g., Hepatology, Respiratory, Neuroscience), data standards, and governance principles to build high-value, harmonized multi-modal omics data assets.
Why you?
Required Qualifications & Skills:
We seek professionals with:
* A PhD or MS with 3+ years of relevant scientific and data sciences experience.
* At least 1 year of experience leading a team, with a passion for performance, skills, and career development.

* At least 5 years programming experience in Python (preferred) and/or R, with familiarity with modern software development tools (git/GitHub, DevOps, CI/CD).
* At least 3 years experience with cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, Kubernetes) and bioinformatics/data engineering tools (Nextflow, Docker, Spark, BigQuery).
* Experience in reproducible research techniques, data standards, and FAIR principles, especially in genetics, cellular imaging, or omics.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional desirable traits include:
* Proven record of developing scalable algorithms and methodologies for large-scale genetics, imaging, or multi-modal omics data.
* Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
* Experience delivering complex projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
* Learning agility and scientific curiosity, with a focus on impactful results amidst ambiguity and change.
