The role will sit in the Group Strategy team within the CEO office, reporting to the Director, Strategy. Group Strategy is a small, high-performing team responsible for supporting the CEO and CFO in developing Centrica’s corporate strategy.
1. The team lead the group capital allocation process from the conceptual stage (during strategic plan) to business case and approval
2. The team lead the annual 5-year planning strategic process (“shape”) and the annual strategy day(s) with the Centrica Leadership Team and Centrica Board
3. The team set the boundary conditions and maintain a robust investment framework as well as oversee the Group fundamental and economic assumptions (e.g. WACC)
4. The team are also responsible for leading and supporting a wide range of strategic projects producing analysis and insights on topics which cut across the group

The role
The role leverages the candidate’s financial and strategic skillsets with an opportunity to develop in both areas. The candidate’s main responsibilities are to support in leading the group strategic planning process, develop Centrica’s corporate strategy and bring the strategy to life across the business through monitoring performance against key milestones and championing the strategy. The group strategic plan blends a combination of detailed bottom-up business unit driven plans with detailed cashflow, balance sheets, and P&Ls alongside a top-down driver-based approach, overlaid with a core understanding of the competitive environment in which we operate. This role requires strong financial acumen and market curiosity, as well as excellent communication skills and a propensity for working with and amongst multidisciplinary teams. Diligence and tenacity are essential to ensure high-quality and aligned results.
The candidate will also participate in the Group’s capital allocation process and investment framework and will aid in coordinating the investment process and reviewing potential investment opportunities. Outside of the core deliverables relating to strategic planning and investment cycles, there is opportunity to work closely with the Director, Strategy and wider team on various strategy projects. This work may include project oversight and coordination, collaboration with BU strategy leads, as well as providing analytical support, modelling, market research, offering strategic challenge, slide development, developing communications materials, and delivering communications. There is further scope to support the Group Environment team on understanding climate risks for CDP and TCFD, helping build credibility and reputation with key external stakeholders (government, shareholders, customers, credit ratings agencies, NGOs) as well as internal stakeholders (CLT, Board, finance, supply chain etc).
The person
The key requirements for this role include:
5. Professional qualification preferred (CFA, ACA, CIMA or similar)
6. Consulting experience (big-4, MBB, or similar)
7. Experienced in and business planning with strong analytical skills
8. Proven track record of working in high-performing teams and engaging senior stakeholders
9. Experience of working under pressure within a fast-paced environment
10. Corporate finance or strategy experience to underpin effective prioritisation for portfolio choices, resource allocation and investment appraisal
11. Experience consolidating inputs from multiple sources to produce coherent group overviews for senior leadership
12. Experience working in different areas across the Centrica Group (or a competitor) building key relationships and credibility quickly
13. Good analytical, numerical and strategic problem-solving skills are a must
14. Strong consulting strategic tool-kit (frameworks, business model canvass’ etc.)
15. Excellent financial acumen and technical understanding of core financial principals
16. Strong relationship building, communication and influencing; wide existing network
17. Commercial awareness and an understanding of key business drivers
18. Ability to develop strong storylines and communicate concisely (oral, written, PowerPoint)
19. Ability to think creatively and identify new business opportunities
20. Strong self-management, highly proactive and delivery focussed
