Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Lung Clinical Nurse Specialist team. Under direction from the Lead Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate expert nursing care and provide support to lung cancer patients and their carers. The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the coordination and organization of individual treatment programmes throughout the illness trajectory and work to develop communication across divisional and organisational boundaries.
Provide specialist nursing advice and psychological support to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Acts as a resource and contributes to the education and training of other healthcare professionals. Contribute to service development, audit and research projects and help develop educational packages as needed.
Main Duties
* Manage your own caseload of patients whilst working as part of the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Attend MDT meetings.
* Communicate highly sensitive and emotive condition‑related information to patients and relatives (e.g., terminal illness, bereavement).
* Assess new patients in the clinical area utilizing the holistic needs assessment tool to identify physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs and develop a plan as needed.
* Act as patient advocate when relevant and be aware of all treatment options to enable patients to make an informed choice, negotiating with medical teams to agree a pathway of care and treatment.
* Provide continuity of care throughout the patient journey, liaising across specialist services where required.
* Contribute to the development of specialised programmes of care and provide written and oral information to patients and relatives.
* Provide clinical advice and support to healthcare professionals within and across organisational boundaries.
* Act as a role model.
* Initiate changes in management of care.
* Provide support for distressed patients/carers and bereaved relatives, identifying patients at risk and referring to appropriate agencies.
* Maintain and update evidence‑based knowledge and skills.
* Undertake complex assessments and review of patients and carers.
* Contribute to the development of specialist protocols and policies for specialist area of care.
* Be a member of relevant professional association and attend regional/national meetings and conferences.
Person Specification
Essential
* Demonstrable post registration experience.
* Demonstrable experience working with cancer patients.
* NMC Registered Nurse.
* Post registration specialist qualification.
* Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
* Ability to prioritise workload.
Desirable
* Demonstrable experience of acute hospital setting.
* BSc/BA in nursing or related subject.
* Ability/demonstrable experience of directing and instructing others.
