Job Purpose

The Principal Architect Data and Information is a thought-leader and a leader of people, who takes ownership of the Architecture for the Data and Information Architecture Domains.

They engage with the business at a strategic level and gain a deep understanding of the business’ long-term needs, goals and objectives. They then translate these business needs and lead the definition of the necessary foundational architectures across the domains. They ensure that business solutions are performant, scalable, robust, value-driven, secure, sustainable and responsive to change.

Key components of the role include:

* Engaging with key business stakeholders (strategic and operational) to elicit and assess needs that will lead to improved business outcomes.
* Providing proactive guidance and advice to those stakeholders; and creating awareness of opportunities offered by technology.
* Overseeing the process of identifying and defining the technology components and guiding the investment/spend across the Data and Information Architecture domains as required to support business needs – including assessing the technology estate on an ongoing an iterative basis to maximise value.
* Leading, with active involvement, the definition of the Architectural artefacts that describe current, future and transition states of the Technology Estate, together with the corresponding high-level plans & roadmaps – and to ensure the buy-in of key business stakeholders.
* Taking ownership of the creation and maintenance of standards, patterns and other architectural tools that will enable effective and successful realisation of the Architecture.
* Actively participating in Governance forums that oversee implementation of the architecture (via strategic programmes or value streams) and taking critical decisions promptly to ensure alignment with plans, or to manage deviations appropriately.
* Working closely with the other Architects to ensure that solutions are suitable, cross functional and cyber security aligned

The Principal Architects are leaders that are supported by a team of domain experts covering each of the relevant domains, who in turn take ownership of those domains.

The Principal Architect Data and Information works collaboratively with the other Principal Architects, Chief Information Technology Architect and the Chief OT Engineer.

Job Accountabilities

* Engage with key stakeholders at both an operational and strategic level to understand and derive their technology needs in the medium to long term – specifically relating to the Data and Information Architecture domains.
* Agree appropriate solutions and plans to meet these needs, securing appropriate levels of investment/funding to realise these plans.
* Lead the definition of the Architecture Lifecycle for applications across UU – aligned to a broader Enterprise Architecture and aligned to the corporate strategy and plans. Assess the financial and technical impact of change and agree an architecture investment strategy.
* Lead the definition of architecture models for the Data and Information Architecture domains, including as-is, to-be and transition state architecture models.
* Lead and facilitate the development of a technology strategy/strategies for the Data and Information Architecture domains, including the development of roadmaps and plans for realising technology strategy and plans.
* Lead and facilitate the creation of domain-specific Architecture Principles to guide solution decision making for the United Utilities.
* Contribute to the definition of overarching Enterprise Architecture Principles.
* Lead the definition of standards, patterns, and other architectural artefacts that guide the implementation of the Architecture for the Data and Information Architecture domains.
* Perform regular review of those artefacts, assessing and verifying efficacy and need.
* Participate in, and use, Governance forums to ensure that Architecture standards are adhered to, strategic plans and objectives are met, and roadmaps are realised effectively.
* Contribute to the development and ongoing maintenance of Governance processes and forums.
* Manage exceptions and waivers to architecture standards and plans. Manage technical debt as relevant to the Data and Information Architecture domains.
* Actively seek to review and reduce technical debt by engaging with stakeholders and developing plans to remediate debt items.
* Analyse the current business and IT environment, in respect of Data and Information Architecture domains, to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
* Engage key business stakeholders to identify business and technology-enabled innovation opportunities that enable and drive business strategy. Focuses on growing revenue, optimizes costs, and mitigates risks.
* Seek ways to drive adoption of new technology and reuse existing technology for enabling business capabilities, value streams and business processes. Research and provides information on emerging technology trends and disruptions.
* Drives innovation by leveraging new technologies and approaches to renovate, extend, and transform the existing estate.
* Leverage practices such as continuous foresight, innovation and futurism to continuously test Architecture strategies, roadmaps, and models, and determine how to adjust these to become resilient and future-fit.
* Provide consultancy on strategic initiatives and other projects/programmes and act as the point of approval for technology implementations and purchases, ensuring that they are aligned to the enterprise architecture strategy.
* Monitor and report progress against the architecture roadmaps and overall target architecture – within the Data and Information Architecture domains.
* Manage, motivate and develop specialist architects to execute their job roles effectively – realising both their personal objectives and the technology strategy of the United Utilities.
* Coaches, mentors and collaborates with team of subject-matter experts.
* Engage with, and manage relationships with, technology vendors and UU C Suite to ensure the optimal outcome for the United Utilities.

Knowledge And Skills

* First-class skills and significant experience in the definition of Architectural artefacts e.g. architectural models, roadmaps, strategies, principles, standards, patterns etc.
* Good knowledge of one or more Architecture Modelling & Notation techniques (methods)
* Experience of leading technology and architecture for large-scale transformation programmes
* Experience of having applied one or more formal Architecture frameworks (e.g. TOGAF, Zachman)
* Expert knowledge of Integration Architecture, integration patterns and the corresponding technology/vendor landscape.
* Good knowledge of the Data, Information and Security Architecture domains, including the related capabilities and tools.
* Good knowledge of cloud platforms and how these can be exploited effectively for enterprise benefit (one or more of Azure, AWS, GCP).
* Good knowledge of EUC, networks and telecoms architecture.
* Educated to Degree level or equivalent experience.
* MBA or Post-graduate diploma.
* Certification in an Enterprise Architecture Framework
* Prior experience as a successful Enterprise Architect supporting digital transformation.
* Significant experience of defining reference architecture and architectural artefacts from scratch i.e. leading initial creation as well as ongoing maintenance.
* Demonstrated track record in leading and developing high performance teams toward the successful attainment of challenging goals.
* Prior experience in solution / design assurance and governance at scale.
* Significant experience in technology delivery, solution architecture, data architecture, solution assurance or similar roles.
* Experience of leading technology architectures across the Application domains.
* Work for complex organisations undergoing complex and significant transformation, disruption and/or change.
* A strategic thinker with experience of innovation, strategy development and execution in a in a complex geographical / functional matrix organization.
* Knowledge and understanding of world class technology suppliers with a strong external perspective on developments and trends in technology
