Position Overview
An exciting training opportunity as a Clinical Fellow to join our expanding world‑class team at BMEC, part of Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. The role will work with an extended team of specialist nurses, allied health professionals, technicians and photographers to support new ways of working and expand the quality services BMEC already offers.
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical duties include general ward care, surgery, outpatient clinics, and after‑hours emergency cover for Oculoplastic services.
* Manage patients with complications arising during admission and seek senior help when required.
* Participate in new and ongoing projects, presenting at national and international meetings, and undertake at least two projects leading to publication during the Fellowship.
* Ensure all research conforms to Good Research Governance, with approvals from the Research Ethics Committee and Research and Development Directorate.
* Liaise with junior doctors, consultant ophthalmologists, plastic/ENT/dermatology specialists, pathologists, and Oculoplastic consultants.

Person Specification
Eligibility
* Full GMC Registration at time of appointment with a current licence to practise.
Essential Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
* FRCOphth / FRCS(G), FRCI/FRCSEEd(Ophth), MRCOphth/MRCSEEd(Ophth) or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
* Additional postgraduate qualification.
Language Skills
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English sufficient for effective communication with patients and colleagues. Proof may be via undergraduate training in English, IELTS overall 7.5 (speaking 7.5, listening 7.5, reading 7.5, writing 7.5), or Europass Language Passport at level C1.
Relevant Experience in Specialty
* CCT in Ophthalmology for UK candidates; experience of Oculoplastic and Lacrimal Surgery within an approved training programme.
* Appropriate experience of supervised and unsupervised surgery as per college guidelines.
Clinical Skills
* Relevant specialty clinical knowledge and ability to apply sound clinical knowledge to patient care.
* Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
* Core knowledge base in Ophthalmology, with prior exposure to Oculoplastic and Lacrimal surgery.
Training and Research
* Evidence of experience as a trainer/teacher.
* Understanding of research principles and value; published and presented research papers and posters in the relevant subspecialty.
Desirable
* Commitment to publishing within the field of Oculoplastic surgery.
