Job Description
What if you could do the kind of work the world needs? At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects, and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives, experience a world of opportunity, and shape a career as unique as you.
A Little More About Your Role…
* Supporting the delivery of bespoke numerical modelling projects to enable decision making in subsurface geoengineering projects, with a particular focus on simulating subsurface flow and associated processes. Typical consulting projects span geological storage of nuclear waste; energy (geothermal, oil & gas, CO₂ storage, H₂ storage, wind); mining; water resources; and infrastructure.
* Driving forward the geoscience modelling team’s capabilities in subsurface flow simulation, including multi‑phase flow, coupled thermo‑hydro‑mechanical‑chemical processes, finite volume analysis, and mesh generation.
* Assisting with the development of industry‑leading solutions for geoscience data interpretation, numerical simulation, and risk analysis within the global modelling team, including supporting the development of WSP’s in‑house FracMan® modelling software.
* Staying abreast of the latest technological advances and industry trends in subsurface risk assessment and model‑based decision making, with flexible learning of new technical skills.
* Being proactive within WSP’s global ‘practice area networks’ (PANs) to seek collaboration opportunities on business and technical initiatives across WSP’s Energy, Infrastructure, Nuclear Waste and Mining businesses.
* Developing and supporting links with commercial clients across WSP’s sectors, seeking opportunities to offer existing services, innovate new solutions to fit clients’ needs, or deliver software training courses.
* Supporting business development and writing proposals to extend our portfolio of modelling projects and technical offering.
* Producing high‑quality scientific/technical reports and delivering presentations to clients and WSP colleagues.
* Communicating project deliverables to clients and advocating for our modelling services to external and internal stakeholders.
Your Team
* You will be joining a multi‑disciplinary team of experts in the UK, focused on delivering technologically driven consulting projects and software solutions. Industries include nuclear waste disposal, infrastructure (tunnels, slopes, geotechnics, underground storage), water (groundwater resource management), energy (oil & gas, deep geothermal, CCUS), and mining (slope stability, underground mining, lithium extraction).
* The team’s business and clients span the globe, covering major international companies, government organisations, and academia.
* This role reports to leaders of the WSP Geoscience group in the UK. The core of our UK‑based team comprises approximately 20 members covering geology, geomechanics, flow simulation, geophysics, and software development, and we routinely collaborate internationally.
* A choice of office locations is available, with preferences for Bristol or Edinburgh; colleagues also sit in London, Reading, Manchester, Cardiff, Exeter, Nottingham, and Edinburgh.
Qualifications
* Doctorate or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a mathematical (e.g. Mathematics, Engineering, Physics) or numerate geoscience subject (e.g. Reservoir Engineering, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Geomechanics/Geotechnics).
* Strong track record with numerical subsurface modelling software and techniques, particularly subsurface flow simulation with finite volume/finite element codes, multi‑phase flow, and coupled processes applied to disposal/storage or reservoir development.
* Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB.
* A resourceful, independent approach with strong initiative and decision‑making skills.
* Excellent verbal communication skills (English) to absorb and impart technical concepts effectively.
* Excellent scientific writing ability, with experience producing high‑quality technical reports and scientific papers.
* Consulting experience delivering geoscience modelling‑related projects in Energy, Nuclear, Water, Environment, or Infrastructure sectors.
* Experience in software development using Python, Fortran, or C++.
* Experience in data analysis and management using scripting languages and SQL/PostgreSQL.
* Successful experience preparing bids for competitive tender processes.
* Experience in client liaison and professional relationship management.
* Project management skills.
Here at WSP we positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy or maternity/paternity. As a Disability Confident leader, we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria; please let us know if you require any workplace adjustments in support of your application.
