Overview: Are you passionate about supporting young people (aged with special educational needs and making a meaningful difference in their lives? If so, we are looking for a Special Needs Assistant to join our team.
As a Special Needs Assistant, you will provide essential educational support to students with a range of needs, including autism spectrum condition. You will play a key role in fostering independence, well-being, and skill development within an inclusive classroom environment.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Tutor in the classroom, you will assist with the educational support and the care of the young person(s) with special educational needs who is/are in the Tutor's care.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the young people to be supported.
* Participate in the evaluation of the support and encourage young people's participation in the evaluation.
* Participate in the evaluation of work placement readiness for young people.
* Support in implementing behavioural management programmes as directed.
* Assist young people to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on their own by assisting with the management of the learning environment through:
* clarifying and explaining instruction.
* ensuring the young people can use equipment and materials provided.
* assisting in motivating and encouraging the young people as required.
* assisting in areas requiring reinforcement or development.
* promoting the independence of young people to enhance learning.
* helping young people stay on the work set.
* Be aware of organisation policies, procedures and of confidential issues linked to the role and to keep confidences appropriately.
* Establish a supportive relationship with the young people concerned.
* Prepare and produce appropriate resources to support young people.
* Supervise groups of young people, or individuals on specified activities including talking and listening, using ICT, extra-curricular activities, and other duties, as directed by the Tutor.
* Under the direction of the Tutor assist with occasional off-site activities.
* Ensure as far as possible a safe environment for young people.
* Report to the Tutor any signs or symptoms displayed which may suggest that a young person requires expert or immediate attention.
* Assist with classroom administration.
* Assist the Tutor with the implementation of the system for recording the young persons progress.
* Provide regular feedback about the young person(s) to the Tutor.
* Assist with production of charts, displays, and other resources as required.
* Attend relevant training.
* Such other duties as may be assigned by the Tutor or Centre Manager.

Person Specification
* Have completed training relevant to working with Children/ Young People with SEN e.g. SEBD, ASD, ADHD, Language and Communication.
Hold a minimum of a Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in one of the relevant areas from a recognised accredited awarding body.
AND
Have a minimum of 6 months experience which has been gained either through working in a formal learning environment or through a placement completed as part of your level 2 (or equivalent) qualification.
At interview demonstrate a working knowledge of:
* Health and safety requirements.
* Development needs of young people.
* Child and vulnerable adult protection and safeguarding.
Skills - Evidence of the following skills to support young person-centred learning and assist with the management of the learning environment:
* Effective planning and organising skills.
* Ability to follow agreed systems and plans.
* Ability to work as part of team
* Ability to work flexibly and creatively to help ensure a young person-centred learning experience.
* Effective and positive communication skills.
