Thorn Baker are looking for an ambitious and detail-oriented Junior Quantity Surveyor, or an assistant looking to take the next step in their development. Working for a civil engineering and groundworks contractor, supporting the Senior QS to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality and safety standards.
Your Responsibilities
1. Cost Estimation & Budgeting: Assist in preparing accurate cost estimates for residential developments and ongoing project costs.
2. Contract Administration: Support the preparation and administration of contracts, including variations, claims, and payment certificates.
3. Tendering & Procurement: Help prepare tender documents, review bids, and manage procurement processes.
4. Cost Control: Monitor project budgets, track costs, and assist with reporting on cost performance and forecasts.
5. Measurement & Valuation: Assist in measuring and valuing work completed on-site, ensuring accurate valuation and payment applications.
6. Site Visits: Conduct site visits to assess progress, identify risks, and review contract performance.
7. Reporting: Prepare regular reports for senior management, including project cost updates, risk assessments, and progress reports.
8. Collaboration: Work closely with site teams, contractors, and clients to resolve issues and ensure smooth financial management of projects.
9. Compliance & Documentation: Maintain records and documentation according to company procedures and legal requirements.
10. Risk Management: Assist in identifying and mitigating risks to project cost and timelines.
Required Skills
1. Degree or working towards in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent).
2. Minimum of 1-2 years experience as an Assistant QS, Junior QS, or similar role in the construction industry.
3. Experience working for a civil engineering contractor is preferred but not essential.
4. Familiarity with construction contracts (JCT, NEC) and cost management practices.
5. Proficient in MS Office.
6. Strong analytical skills with keen attention to detail.
7. Excellent communication & interpersonal skills, able to liaise with various stakeholders.
8. Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
