Overview
The Clinical Psychologist will lead a specialist clinical psychology service to the Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis Service in Worcestershire, addressing the psychological needs of children and young people and their families. This includes specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes, focusing on identifying and treating psychological and emotional issues associated with diabetes and cystic fibrosis. The Clinical Psychologist will provide strategic direction on the development, implementation and evaluation of the psychology service for children and their families with complex needs, within a multi-disciplinary environment.
To provide consultation, advice and training as appropriate to other members of the service and to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary health team. To contribute to service evaluation, audit, research and policy development. To take initiative and responsibility for the quality of their own work and the service provided to patients. To contribute to teaching, clinical governance and administrative activities relevant to the clinical psychology service within the diabetes and cystic fibrosis service.
To provide clinical supervision and line management to other qualified clinical psychologists, assistant psychologists or trainee clinical psychologists as required. Clinical supervision for the post-holder will be established with an appropriately qualified and experienced clinical psychologist.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Adhere to national and local standards and guidelines relating to professional practice; comply with current legislation and employer procedures.
* Demonstrate commitment to personal development and acquisition of further skills and knowledge.
* Manage own time and a defined caseload; supervise volunteers and assistants; handle student observations.
* Conduct assessments, deliver treatments, produce reports, evaluate outcomes and manage discharges; make onward referrals where appropriate; provide advice to carers.
* Provide highly specialised clinical psychology services for children, young people and their families within the Worcestershire Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis Service.
* Conduct psychological assessments, formulation, treatment planning and delivery; select and interpret psychometric, cognitive, developmental and neuropsychological assessments; implement evidence-based psychological treatments; monitor outcomes and adapt interventions as needed.
* Work autonomously within BPS and HCPC guidelines and service policies; take responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions.
* Contribute to MDT functioning to deliver comprehensive clinical care; communicate sensitively with children, families, carers and colleagues.
* Formulate and communicate complex assessment findings and implement treatment plans (individual, family or group).
* Provide highly specialist psychological consultation and advice to colleagues and external settings and contribute to a psychologically informed framework within the service.
* Attend multidisciplinary and medic-led clinics as required; assess and monitor risk and safeguarding; develop risk management plans and advise on psychological aspects of risk assessment.
* Raise awareness of psychological and systemic perspectives on illness and physical health within the team.
* Provide psychological support to children and families emotionally distressed by the child’s condition or treatment; maintain relationships with CAMHS and local agencies.
* Teaching, training and supervision: receive regular supervision; provide supervision to other psychologists and trainees; identify training needs and deliver specialist clinical teaching and consultation.
* Management, recruitment, policy and service development: lead the provision, development and evaluation of clinical psychology within the diabetes and CF service; provide line management; identify service improvements and coordinate relevant projects; monitor workload and contribute to staff appraisals; participate in recruitment as appropriate; engage service users in planning and development.
* Resource management and strategic planning: manage psychological resources within the team; contribute to policy issues related to clinical psychology; participate in MDT collaborations and relevant policy/reporting.
* Research, audit and service evaluation: lead development of clinical psychology through service evaluation and audit; conduct and advise on research; disseminate findings and support evidence-based practice.
* Communication and liaison: liaise with patients, families and professionals; represent clinical psychology in diabetes at an operational level; contribute to regional network activities.
* Clinical Governance: initiate and evaluate clinical governance for the service.
* Professional Responsibility: maintain Continuing Professional Development per BPS/HCPC and Trust requirements; stay updated on professional practice, legislation and policies.
