Senior Mechanical Engineer
A leading engineering organisation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (SME) to lead teams of mechanical and structural engineers across multiple project phases. This role carries responsibility for technical delivery, engineering analysis, team leadership and the development of innovative engineering solutions.
The SME will guide the technical vision of assigned projects, support staff development, and ensure high‑quality engineering output. This position requires strong leadership, deep technical expertise, and the ability to operate effectively within complex, fast‑paced project environments.
Role Purpose
To lead mechanical and structural engineering teams in delivering all design phases of one or more projects, ensuring technical excellence, effective planning, and high‑performance teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
Lead engineering teams through all design phases, from concept to completion.
Drive the development of new techniques, improved processes, and enhanced documentation.
Take ownership of complex, high‑scope projects, including industry‑first solutions.
Resolve key technical challenges using real‑world engineering expertise.
Conduct preliminary facility impact assessments and high‑level calculations.
Lead and review engineering calculations using hand calculations, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software.
Support project management with site surveys, technical queries, client comments and design requests.
Consider installation, shipping and integration strategies to guide design decisions.
Manage updates from red‑line drawings, inspections, FAT/SAT activities and compliance documentation.
Prepare complete project packs, O&M documentation, labelling and final sign‑off materials.
Production & Legacy Support
Support production teams through handover meetings, technical queries and inspection activities.
Assist with internal and external FAT processes and inspection visits.
Provide support for legacy equipment designed internally or externally.
Team Leadership & Development
Prepare work packages, supervise engineering staff and review completed work.
Approve scopes and schedules for mechanical engineering assignments.
Plan and coordinate documentation and activities across multiple major projects.
Mentor and guide colleagues on both technical and personal development.
Provide timely feedback, recognition and support for team members.
Participate in recruitment, interviewing and onboarding of new engineering staff.
Collaboration & Communication
Communicate effectively across all platforms and with all stakeholders.
Represent the organisation professionally with clients, suppliers, contractors and external bodies.
Lead departmental project meetings and contribute to cross‑disciplinary reviews.
Foster an inclusive, collaborative environment where team members feel valued.

Ensure safety and quality processes are maintained and improved.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (typically Mechanical) or equivalent experience.
Strong understanding of engineering analysis software and tools.
