Acute Oncology Support Worker - Peterborough

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) delivers a 7-day service to patients admitted to Peterborough City Hospital and as well as Hinchingbrooke Hospital (5 days a week) with complications of systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) and radiotherapy treatments. The post holder will support the nursing team clinically with the review and care of unwell patients attending the haematology oncology unit. They will support the Acute Oncology (AOS) team with triaging the emergency phone and maintain delivery of the service from an administration aspect, including the undertaking of audits as well as the collating of patient data.


Main duties of the job

Clinically support the nursing team with acutely unwell patients.

Triage the emergency phone to ensure the patient calls are managed and directed to the right people/department whilst ensuring to escalate where appropriate.

Support the CUP CNS

Assist in the admin of the team, to allow for service maintenance and development.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Good standard of general education to GSCE level or equivalent
* Educated to A level or NVQ level 3, with knowledge of Health & Social Care
* Coaching qualification
* Foundation Degree/Post Graduate Diploma


Experience

* Extensive experience of working within a busy clinical healthcare setting
* Experience of identifying a deteriorating patient and how to escalate such
* Extensive patient or public facing experience
* Prioritising, planning and organising own tasks to meet competing deadlines
* Experience of working as part of a team and individually
* Experience of working within guidelines, policies and protocols
* Experience of dealing with difficult situations and confrontations with both colleagues and patients
* Proven experience in data entry and associated documentation
* Experience of IT packages - Microsoft Office, Excel and IT equipment e.g. ipads and tablets
* Insight into cancer and related issues
* Knowledge / experience of Audit


Skills

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including telephone, email, face to face with both colleagues and patients
* Understanding and practice of clinical skills such as ECG's, Bladder Scans, Phlebotomy and cannulation.
* Ability to store and safeguard confidential documents
* Flexible in approach to work and the changing needs of the service
* Ability to prioritise own workload and occasionally the work of others
* Ability to meet deadlines
* Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Ability to use own initiative and work autonomously
* Willing to take on / learn new skills
* Ability to show attention to detail and accuracy
* Ability to raise safeguarding concerns if required through appropriate channels.
* Experience in delivering health education sessions to groups


Knowledge

* Experience in or good understanding of health and social care services and pathways
* Demonstrate awareness of the needs of people affected by cancer
* Understanding of the anxiety and distress of some patients and relatives
* Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology
* Awareness of national and local cancer guidance, including the living with and beyond cancer agenda
* Knowledge of cancer information and services
