Job Title

Vitreo-retinal Fellow (1-year fixed term)


Overview

The post will be based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, and the Prince Charles Eye Unit, Windsor. The appointment is a one‑year fixed term with close supervision and access to vitreo‑retinal surgical experience.


Responsibilities

* Perform vitreo‑retinal surgery and clinics, forming the majority of the timetable.
* Contribute to medical retina and general ophthalmic services, including inpatient care and on‑call work.
* Undertake ROP screening for departmental cover.
* Participate in scheduled activities – a whole‑time post with a minimum of 10 programmed activities.
* Complete annual appraisal and develop a professional development plan in agreement with the department.
* Actively engage in clinical governance and quality improvement projects.
* Seek opportunities for continuing education, teaching, research, and audit.


Working Environment

The department handles approximately 7,000 day‑case procedures and 100,000 outpatient attendances per year, serving a population of about one million. At Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, the service is located in the Eye Block with dedicated Eye Day Case Unit and inpatient care on Dorrell Ward for Head and Neck patients. Dedicated theatres are equipped with Bausch & Lomb phaco and posterior vitrectomy instruments, cyclodiode and indirect lasers, and training recording equipment.

At the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor, located on the King Edward VII Hospital site, two fully commissioned ophthalmic theatres support day‑case admissions and minor operations, including emergency and elective vitreo‑retinal procedures.

Ophthalmic Accident and Emergency services are available at both sites, adjacent to the clinics. All outpatient facilities are equipped with up‑to‑date technology including OCT with angiography, autofluorescence, HRT, wide‑field OPTOS photography with FFA and ICG, ultrasound, YAG/SLT and multi‑spot argon lasers, Pentacam corneal scanning, and IOL Master biometry.
