About the Role
Pollution Advisor. Working Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (flexible working arrangements considered). Contract Type: 24 months fixed term contract/secondment. Salary: From £42,500. Location: Washington.
Northumbrian Water Group is looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Pollution Advisor to join our Wastewater Directorate. This role focuses on ensuring we meet regulatory obligations and protect the environment through accurate pollution reporting and operational excellence. You will be responsible for the timely and accurate completion and submission of pollution reports to the Environment Agency (EA). You’ll lead investigations into pollution incidents and represent NWG in discussions with the EA, defending our position with professionalism and integrity. You will perform root cause analyses to identify preventative measures and use data to spot trends and opportunities to reduce pollution events.
You will work closely with internal teams and the EA, developing strong working relationships to support the delivery of our Pollution Tactical Plan. You will generate weekly and monthly KPIs to monitor performance and communicate progress toward environmental goals. A key part of the role is driving continuous improvement by identifying and implementing innovative solutions, and you will support pollution reduction projects under the guidance of the Pollution Programme Manager. This is a role with potential to make a real impact and contribute to sustainability, accountability, and environmental protection.
About You
To be successful, you should hold a degree in a relevant discipline or have equivalent professional experience. A comprehensive understanding of regulations, legislation, and environmental considerations surrounding wastewater assets is essential. Experience within the water industry or a regulatory-focused environment is preferred, along with strong skills in Microsoft Excel and Word for data analysis.
Key attributes include strong analytical abilities, the ability to turn data into actionable insights, excellent communication and persuasion skills, and the ability to manage time effectively and work independently when required. Knowledge of sewage and sludge treatment processes, regulatory data experience, and liaison with regulatory bodies is advantageous. Experience in environmental impact assessments would also be valuable. The role requires producing accurate, high-quality technical reports and demonstrated data-driven decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
