Tobe responsible for the accurate and timely processing of prescription requestsfor the entitled population, liaising effectively with all relevant personnel.Duties can include but are not limited to, the processing of repeat prescriptionsin electronic and hard copy format, including online requests. In addition, thepost-holder will be required to support the multidisciplinary team, ensuringthe strategic objectives of the practice are met.


Main duties of the job

Process repeat prescription requests in readiness for GPsignature within agreed timeframe.

Reconcile medications to facilitatecollection timetable.

Liaise with patients and Clinician's regarding medication queries

Ensuremedication reviews are arranged by maintaining an accurate recall system

Effectively liaise with external services i.e. district nursesto ensure medicaments are arranged for housebound patients

Update patient records as appropriate

Record and reported significant events accurately andappropriately, informing the Clinical Pharmacist immediately following internalreporting procedures

Primary Responsibilities

Thefollowing are the core responsibilities of the prescription clerk. There maybe on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will bedependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a.Process repeat prescription requests received by post, repeatprescription re-order form and the online patient access system, inaccordance with practice protocol

b.Produce prescriptions for the GP to sign in an acceptabletimeframe

c.Ensure all prescription requests are processed and areready for collection within a 48-hour timeframe

d.Generate requests for medication on behalf of the patientfor non-repeat items, where this has been agreed by the prescribingclinician.

e.Actively encourage patients to reconcile medications tofacilitate monthly collections

f.Discuss with patients their requirements, encouragingpatients to order only what they require

g.Act upon compliance issues, liaising with the appropriateclinician

h.Ensure medication reviews are arranged by maintaining anaccurate recall system

i.Effectively liaise with external services i.e. districtnurses to ensure medicaments are arranged for housebound patients

j.Input data into the patients healthcare records asnecessary

k.Deal with all prescription related enquiries in a timelymanner

l.Record and reported significant events accurately andappropriately, informing the practice manager immediately

m.Read code data on EMIS Health Care System

n.Carry out system searches as requested

o.Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at alltimes

Secondary Responsibilities

Inaddition to the primary responsibilities, the prescription clerk may berequested to:

a.Support the practice clinical pharmacist as required

b.Partake in audit as directed by the audit lead

c.Support the Practice Manager in reviewing and updatingthe practice prescribing policy


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
* GCSE Mathematics and English (C or above)
* NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care


Experience

* Experience of working with the general public
* Experience of working in a health care setting
* Experience as working as a Prescription Clerk


Knowledge and skills

* Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
* Clear, polite telephone manner
* Competent in the use of Office and email communication system e.g. Outlook, nhs.net
* Effective time management (Planning & Organising)
* Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
* Good interpersonal skills
* Problem solving and analytical skills
