Occupational Therapist Greyfriars PICU

Permanent part‑time position, 30 hours per week.
An experienced, compassionate and motivated Senior Occupational Therapist is needed for the Greyfriars Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Wotton Lawn Hospital.
The role involves creating, delivering and evaluating occupational therapy interventions for inpatient service users with complex mental health needs, including those with learning disabilities and physical health challenges. The interventions should align with the principles of Recovery and Social Inclusion to support safe and effective discharge planning. Delegation of tasks to other team members will be required as outlined in individual patient plans.
The Therapy Department at Wotton Lawn provides a 7‑day service. You will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to assess and manage risks associated with interventions.
Main duties
* Provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and treatment to individuals with complex mental health needs.
* Apply the Model of Human Occupation and associated assessment tools to clinical practice and support reasoning.
* Ensure risks associated with interventions and environments are assessed and managed collaboratively with the MDT.
* Support the OT team and wider hospital community.
Job responsibilities
* Prioritise specialist occupational therapy to promote patient independence, social interaction, wellness, and quality of life.
* Ensure statutory occupational therapy input, including risk and safety assessments, specialist assessment of complex needs, and intervention and discharge planning.
* Assist the unit manager and EAP team lead with clinical practice development for the EAP Team, Physiotherapy, Exercise and Health, Occupational Therapy, and Activity Coordinators.
* Prescribe equipment and therapy resources based on patient needs assessments.
* Work flexible hours across the seven‑day service and cover areas as required to support clinical cover.
Person specification
Length and nature of experience
* Significant experience in an acute inpatient setting.
* Completion of relevant preceptorship programme.
* Teaching and presentation experience.
Qualifications
* Registered Occupational Therapist.
* Formal teaching and assessment course (completed or commencement date known).
* Appraisal skills – appraisee within 3 months as required.
* Risk assessment and management – within 3 months.
* Management of violence and aggression – within 3 months.
* Supervision skills (clinical).
Professional and specialist knowledge
* Medical Emergency Response Team training (equivalent to immediate life support).
* Comprehensive knowledge of the MHA, MCA and other legal aspects of mental health care.
* Knowledge of PICU assessment criteria.
* Clinical supervisory skills.
* Working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach.
* Comprehensive knowledge of relevant occupational therapy assessments.
* Working knowledge of the Trust and care group clinical guidelines, policies and procedures.
* Awareness of NICE guidelines (and other national guidelines) relating to working‑age adult mental health.
* Awareness of health and well‑being recommendations.

Contract and working pattern

Salary
£39,959 to £48,117 per annum (pro rata).
