Data Centre - Technical Services Manager
Flexible Working: We recognise the value of flexibility in the workplace. Although this role requires you to be in the office five days a week, we strive to support a balanced work-life. Additionally, the role includes weekly national travel, offering you the opportunity to collaborate with various teams and stakeholders.
About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people, and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to the government, businesses, and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
As the manager for our Data Centre Technical Services Team, your role will be to ensure operational integrity across our multiple data centres. This includes managing a team, working closely with our facilities management suppliers, and overseeing the budgets for our portfolio of sites. Through your efforts, you’ll ensure our data centres remain resilient, operationally active, and compliant.
Day-to-day, your role involves supporting your team to deliver a consistent experience for all building users, including both colleagues and visitors. As part of our technically experienced leadership team, you’ll also play a key role in project work, from identifying and scoping, to pricing and then monitoring the delivery of improvement projects from start to finish.
In addition to these responsibilities, you’ll liaise with stakeholders, apply your technical expertise, and train your team to ensure effective facility management across MI5. As you travel nationwide to our various sites, you’ll oversee critical systems such as power, cooling, and fire safety, ensuring our offices remain safe and operational for everyone.
About You
To apply, you’ll need an NVQ Level 4/5 or Higher National Certificate (HNC) level 4/5 in either Building Services Engineering, Facilities Management, or Engineering Maintenance. Membership in the Institute of Engineers is also required.
Experience in managing complex data facilities is essential, along with the technical expertise to support your team and contribute to system improvement projects. Extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance for data centres and critical environments is necessary.
An experienced, proactive leader, you’re someone your team can rely on for support and training. You navigate complex stakeholder relationships with ease, collaborating with colleagues across MI5 to achieve your goals.
Training and Development
When you join, you’ll have a thorough induction with us, including an introductory course that will tell you all about MI5 and what we do. As you settle into your role, we will fund and support your efforts to enhance your knowledge and skills through both internal and external, courses, leading to recognised certifications.
We’ll also support any relevant enhanced training you might need to supplement your existing knowledge and experience.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary of £62,837 plus other benefits including:

25 days of annual leave, automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years of service, and an additional 10.5 days of public and privilege holidays.
Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme.
Dedicated development budget.
Interest-free season ticket loan.
Excellent pension scheme.
Cycle to work scheme.
Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations).
Paid parental and adoption leave.
