The role is responsible for increasing our Machine Learning capability within Santander UK by combining a wide range of technical skills with business knowledge to turn vast quantities of data into value.
The role will actively engage with clients within the bank to evaluate and identify data science problems that offer the greatest opportunities to the organisation.
You will use advanced data science techniques & approaches to solve specific business problems. Explore a variety of techniques to identify the optimal solution. Encourage efficiency by delivering analysis that is complete and can be interrogated by consumers.

1. Summarise large data sets into meaningful conclusions using available tools; discover patterns and trends.
2. Build predictive models and machine learning algorithms.
3. Provide a support role & mentorship to members of the Data Science team in business & technical aspects of the job. Continuously ensure effective execution of duties at more junior level.
4. Ensure that output is actionable and adds value.
5. Take responsibility for projects & lead them without active supervision.
6. Able to tell a compelling story by making complex things simple to understand for technical and non-technical audiences.
7. Present the information in a logical way using data science visualisation tools.
8. Have knowledge of Data Science techniques with evidence of using them on data across supervised & unsupervised learning business problems. Technical understanding of most commonly used algorithms – Linear Regressions, Random Forests, SVMs, KNN, K-means, etc.
What you’ll bring:
9. Have knowledge of statistics (statistical distributions, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals).
10. Experience in practical data processing, data visualisation & information retrieval.
11. Programming experience in Python & SQL preferably developed in a commercial setting of + year. Exposure to Spark is desirable, but not essential.
12. Working knowledge of the following libraries: numpy, scipy, pandas, scikit learn, matplotlib, seaborn.
13. DevOps experience in areas such as Git and Agile development methods.
14. Understanding of big data technologies (Hadoop).
15. Knowledge & experience working with cloud platforms for the deployment of machine learning solutions is advantageous.
16. Knowledge of AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Hugging Face Transformers, Langchain and Langgraph.
17. Understanding of fine-tuning pre-trained LLMs on specific datasets to adapt them for custom tasks and deploying models in production environments.
18. Understanding of AI ethics, fairness, and bias mitigation techniques. Ability to implement ethical AI practices and ensure that AI models are fair, transparent, and accountable.
19. Degree level or equivalent in a numerical subject such as data science, physics, engineering or applied maths.
It would also be nice for you to have:
20. Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline is advantageous, but not required.
21. Be an active collaborator in the Data Science Community and help to devise best practice, particularly in relation to data preparation, code sharing & template use.

22. Our preferred location for this role is Milton Keynes, but we’ll also consider locating the role in Glasgow.

To support this, we offer site-based contracts with a hybrid working pattern and our expected level of attendance in an office is at least days per month (pro-rata for part-time roles).
