Overview
SYNLAB UK & Ireland, operating as part of Southwest Pathology Services (SPS), provides a 24/7 biomedical science service across Hospital and hub sites in Taunton and Yeovil. The role is based at Musgrove Park Hospital and the SPS Hub laboratory in Taunton, working with Sysmex, ACL and Ortho Vision analysers.
Responsibilities
* Perform and interpret routine and specialist testing to provide patient‑centred scientific excellence in accordance with ISO15189.
* Supervise, mentor and support other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants within the department.
* Maintain fitness to practice, participate actively in CPD and support professional development through available training resources.
* Make decisions in line with guidelines and written procedures, particularly in critical situations such as major haemorrhage and trauma.
* Embed a culture of continual improvement and positive impact on patient health and wellbeing.
About You
* HCPC registration with post‑registration experience in a Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion section.
* Excellent working knowledge of automated Haematology and Blood Transfusion platforms, with a proven ability to prioritise and manage workload.
* Good understanding of clinical significance of results and ability to interpret and act upon results in a lone‑working setting.
* Confidence to make decisions in line with guidelines and written procedures, supporting care of critically ill patients.
* For Band 6 applicants: specialist portfolio in Haematology (with or without Blood Transfusion) or equivalent qualifications such as the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice.
* Band 5 applicants may apply; SPS offers automatic progression to Band 6 upon successful completion of the specialist portfolio, with a retention bonus.
