Job Summary
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Older Peoples Services at Colchester Hospital and Clacton Hospital. The new appointee will join four other consultants in elderly medicine who provide a comprehensive service for residents of Northeast Essex as part of ESNEFT. It is expected that the appointee will participate in the development of the Frailty service for elderly patients in Northeast Essex. Other subspecialty interests are also welcome. The role includes inpatient care, frailty work, on‑call acute care, and teaching and training junior medical staff.
Main Duties of the Job
Work with colleagues to provide a Consultant‑led service with the highest standard of care; develop care pathways and clinical guidelines; maintain good working practices with wards, out‑patients and the Emergency Department; collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues and primary care; offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior doctors and other multidisciplinary team members; ensure appropriate information is available to measure clinical performance; maintain robust quality review processes; provide a role model of professional leadership; ensure junior doctors training meets College requirements; participate in appraisal of medical staff.

Job Responsibilities
* Take part in the acute medical intake working and provide ongoing medical supervision for patients admitted under his/her care.
* Manage in‑patients on the allocated ward and work closely with other consultants to share care across acute, rehabilitation and other aspects.
* Liaise with department consultants on the development and implementation of protocols, guidelines and clinical audit for elderly patients.
* Provide an advisory service to colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and the mental health Trust.
* Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes and teach other health professionals.
* Participate in the appraisal and assessment of junior medical colleagues as delegated by the Unit Training Director.
* Participate in teaching of Registrars and Resident Doctors.
Person Specification
Essential
* Full registration with the General Medical Council.
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Entry onto the Specialist Register or a UK SpR within 6 months of CCT date at interview.
* Good practical clinical skills.
* Awareness of current specialty‑specific developments and initiatives.
* Expert clinical opinion on acute medical emergencies, rehabilitation and intermediate care.
* At least 4 years at SpR level (or equivalent).
* Ability to build, lead and work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively and be involved in department organisation.
* Must be able to travel to meet post requirements.
Desirable
* Post‑graduate degree (e.g., MD, PhD, MSc).
* Entry onto the Specialist Register in G(I)M & Geriatric Medicine.
* Evidence of work submitted for peer review.
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
* Attendance at teaching course.
* Attendance at management course.
