Posted: 10h ago
Offer description

Waterwhelm's innovative water re-use and desalination technology operates at significantly lower pressures than traditional methods, reducing both capital and maintenance costs. Using waste heat or solar thermal energy, the solution achieves the lowest electricity consumption rate and CO2 emissions in the industry. This groundbreaking circular approach is revolutionising the global water sector by delivering sustainable and cost-effective solutions.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Edinburgh for a Mechanical Engineer. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing machinery, creating detailed technical drawings using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, and contributing to Research and Development (R&D) projects. Additionally, the role will involve overseeing project management tasks, ensuring timely delivery and effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to take on a dual-role position combining technical engineering expertise with project management responsibilities. This role is ideally suited to a hands-on professional with a strong background in process plant environments, particularly those involving corrosive fluids and explosive gases. Approximately 50% of the role will focus on engineering design, equipment selection, and site work, with the remaining 50% dedicated to managing the successful delivery of plant construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering (50%)

* Specify, select, and evaluate equipment including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, pipework, and structural steel for process plant applications.
* Apply in-depth knowledge of materials and component performance in environments involving corrosive fluids and explosive gases.
* Oversee and actively participate in the installation of mechanical systems and machinery.
* Supervise installation crews on-site, ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to specification.
* Carry out hands-on work where required during installation and mechanical assembly.
* Lead and execute commissioning activities, including testing, troubleshooting, and system validation.

Project Management (50%)

* Plan, coordinate, and manage all phases of process plant construction projects.
* Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, ensuring milestones and deadlines are met.
* Perform cost control and budget tracking throughout the project lifecycle.
* Manage vendor relationships, including procurement, expediting, and performance monitoring.
* Lead detailed resource planning, including labour, materials, and equipment allocation.
* Ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and project specifications.

Requirements

* Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Proven experience in process plant environments, particularly with corrosive and hazardous media.
* Strong technical knowledge of process plant machinery and components.
* Demonstrated experience selecting and specifying mechanical equipment.
* Hands-on experience with installation and commissioning of industrial systems.
* Solid project management experience, including scheduling, budgeting, and vendor coordination.
* Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage teams on-site.
* Willingness to be actively involved in both office-based planning and field-based execution.
* Experience working in industries such as chemical processing, oil & gas, or energy.
* Familiarity with relevant industry standards and safety regulations.
* Project management certification (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2) is advantageous.

What We Offer

* A dynamic role combining engineering and leadership responsibilities.
* Opportunity to work on complex and technically challenging projects.
* Competitive salary and benefits package.
* Career development and progression opportunities.
