Salary Trainee Educational Psychologist SCP2 £31,599

We are looking for Trainees entering their 2nd year in September 2026, who have a strong desire to live and work in the Sheffield area.

In line with the AEP position, you will be in a secure employment situation with Sheffield City council and have associated employment rights.

Why Choose Sheffield?

* We are expanding rapidly, increasing the number of EPs in the Service as we continue to expand our partially traded model. We have also recruited a substantial team of Assistant Educational Psychologists, to work in partnership with EPs through collaborative working.
* An established TEP and NQEP support programme to help you transition from being a trainee to a fully qualified EP
* Balance of work with time allocated to school subscriptions, statutory work and systemic work with localities of schools.
* EHCNA allocation fixed.
* Flexibility of working from home, office, or elsewhere, and having supervision and meetings in person or virtual.
* Easily accessible by road and public transport from anywhere in South Yorkshire.
* Sheffield City itself is not only a vibrant re‑modelled city centre with great access to fantastic countryside, it is also an exciting place to work. The Educational Psychology Service is highly valued and supported by the Local Authority, schools and families within the city.

As a trainee EP with Sheffield, you will be able to:

* Develop a range of skills and experiences to demonstrate you meet the relevant competencies leading to successful completion of the doctoral course.
* Attend University as specified in the BPS LGA guidance.
* Fulfil the placement requirements of the BPS LGA in relation to the training of Educational Psychologists.
* Carry out a research project that contributes to the City’s priorities and fulfils the requirements of the doctoral training course.

All applicants must already be in Y1 on a recognised EP professional doctorate training course and be eligible for HCPC registration on completion.

A enhanced disclosure check with the Disclosure and Barring Service will be undertaken for this post.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form. Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we’ll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.

Full‑time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks.

Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Find out more on our Sheffield news page.
