Overview
The Lead Practice Nurse oversees clinical nursing services within a primary care setting, ensuring high standards of patient care and clinical practice. The role involves managing long-term conditions (e.g. diabetes, asthma, COPD), supervising immunisations and cervical screening, leading infection control and health & safety protocols, and mentoring nursing staff. The position requires strong leadership, clinical expertise, effective communication, current NMC registration, and relevant experience in general practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver high-quality patient care in a hands-on role, including cytology, wound and ulcer management, suture removal, Doppler assessments, new patient medicals, urinalysis, travel health advice, contraception reviews, immunisations, and chaperoning. Venepuncture experience is desirable.
* Manage long-term conditions (diabetes, asthma, COPD), request pathology tests, and follow clinical protocols with appropriate referrals.
* Maintain clinical standards by overseeing infection control, PPE, specimen handling, and compliance with national safety guidelines.
* Manage equipment, stock rotation, vaccination ordering, and participate in admin and team meetings to keep the practice running smoothly.
* Uphold patient confidentiality, dignity, professionalism, and contribute to a safe, inclusive environment.
* Engage in ongoing training, performance reviews, quality improvement, and safeguarding responsibilities.
Essential Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
* Proven experience in general practice nursing.
* Skilled in chronic disease management, immunisations, cervical screening, and wound care.
* Strong leadership and communication skills.
* Proficient in clinical systems (e.g. EMIS).
* Knowledge of QOF and CQC frameworks.
* Experience in staff supervision or team leadership.
Desirable Qualifications
* Additional qualifications in chronic disease or women's health.
