Job Summary
Join the Cambridge Genomics Laboratory, the lead provider for the East NHS Genomic Medicine Service, and play a pivotal role in delivering high‑quality rare disease diagnostics and improving patient care. As a Principal Clinical Scientist you will lead and manage a team of scientists, oversee the interpretation of complex genomic data, authorise clinical reports, and provide specialist scientific expertise across a diverse test repertoire. You will also contribute to service leadership, quality management, accreditation activities, staff development and the implementation of innovative genomic technologies.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a team of scientists undertaking genetic diagnostic tests in rare disease.
* Analyse, interpret data and write and authorise clinical reports.
* Provide clinical scientific expertise for the repertoire of disorders/tests offered by the assigned team.
* Train and mentor scientific staff.
* Serve on the laboratory leadership team, contributing to all aspects of providing a high‑quality service.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered Clinical Scientist with HCPC.
* Completion of a formal training programme in Laboratory Genetics or equivalent postgraduate qualification (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant subject and external examinations.
* Completion of Part 1 FRCPath in Genetics; OR PhD in relevant Human Genetics subject and actively preparing for Part 1 FRCPath.
* Significant experience as a Clinical Scientist in a genomics laboratory.
* Experience of research and development relevant to genomic testing.
* Experience of project management and of management and supervision of staff.
* Comprehensive knowledge of human genetics and rare disease cytogenetics and molecular genetic techniques.
* Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
* Knowledge of general managerial procedures, data protection requirements, and UKAS ISO:15189 quality assurance.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to organise and manage complex activities, to provide leadership and training to scientific teams, and to maintain concentration amid frequent interruptions.
* Experience with laboratory computer systems and standard software packages.
* Ability to prepare and present complex scientific and clinical information at meetings or training events.
* Experience developing new policies and protocols.

* Ability to deal with difficult and challenging situations.
Eligibility & Admission Requirements
* Must hold HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
* Full‑time permanent vacancies cannot be filled by individuals on a Student visa unless they have applied for a Graduate visa or have completed their course and applied for a Graduate visa before the anticipated start date of employment. Alternatively, the Trust may sponsor a Skilled Worker visa if required.
* Applicants requiring current Skilled Worker sponsorship will be considered alongside all other applications.
Compensation & Benefits
* Salary: £57,528 to £64,750 a year, pro rata.
* Permanent contract, full‑time, flexible working pattern.
