Job overview

An exciting opportunity for a speech and language therapist (band 5-6) with an interest in working with patients with mental illness, autism and sensory issues.

The post holder will work alongside a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and a Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist who is a Sensory Integration therapist. The post holder will also have a small caseload of patients with dysphagia and communication issues. A developing specialist role (band 6) will be considered for those able to demonstrate sound/independent dysphagia skills. Inter‑Trust Secondment for 18 months and working on the hospital bank are also options.


Main duties of the job

Work with the clinical teams; assess and manage new or deteriorating dysphagia, assess speech, language and communication difficulties, implement treatment plans, and represent SLT in the Care Programme Approach throughout a patient’s admission.

Previous experience with learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, a mental health condition and/or challenging behaviours is desirable but not essential. Clinicians with proven competence in physical health settings may have transferable skills for this role.

Dysphagia experience is essential (equal to Level C/D – RCSLT framework or Level 3/4 – EDSCF framework). Opportunity to develop future competence will be provided.

Training and Qualifications

* Registration with HCPC and RCSLT
* Post‑graduate dysphagia training and competence to level 5 (RCSLT May 2020)
* Membership of applicable CEN groups
* Post‑graduate training to Master’s level in applicable area
* Dysphagia competence to level 6 (RCSLT May 2020)


Experience

* Extensive experience working as part of a Multi‑Disciplinary Team
* Experience with adults with complex needs
* Managing own caseload, including communication and dysphagia
* Administration and analysis of formal and informal clinical assessments
* Report writing, setting goals, care plan formulation
* Supervising junior staff and students and giving clinical supervision
* Experience with sensory integration approaches
* Experience with people with mental illness or personality disorder and/or challenging behaviour
* Running groups
* Implementing the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) into clinical areas
* Implementing Accessible Information Standards (AIS) into clinical areas
* Managing specialist pathways within a communication caseload such as fluency or voice
* Training other MDT members in areas related to SLT practice


Knowledge and Skills

* Administer and interpret formal and informal assessments for people with dysphagia, speech, language and cognitive communication difficulties
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant assessment tools and therapeutic interventions
* Specialist knowledge of complex cases, dual diagnosis, presentation and environmental effects
* Specialist knowledge of challenging behaviour
* Knowledge of clinical evidence base and relevant literature
* Knowledge of clinical governance, research and audit
* Effective verbal and written communication with professionals and carers
* Knowledge of adaptive and augmented communication aids and implementation
* Ability to use a total communication approach
* Excellent interpersonal skills
* Good time management and ability to prioritise workload
* Awareness of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Care Programme Approach)
* Research and/or clinical audit skills
* Skills in developing and delivering structured groups
* Willingness and ability to develop a specialist area of expertise and clinical service
* Excellent IT and presentation skills
* Ability to handle complaints and negotiate and resolve conflict
