The post offers an exciting opportunity for experienced and motivated creative professionals with backgrounds in public engagement, public programmes, stakeholder management, and cultural space management to join one of the most progressive public sector design and policy teams in the UK, to coordinate the thought-leading and award-winning Croydon Urban Room project.

The Planning and Sustainable Regeneration directorate, with its Placemaking Team at the core, is helping drive this recovery through diverse activities and programmes supporting good growth, ensuring Croydon meets its full potential, and providing inclusive, inviting places to live, work, and visit. The Croydon Urban Room is central to shaping the recovery and resilience of Croydon town centre since its launch this summer. Its role is to explore and define the future of the town centre within the changing retail landscape and to democratise planning and placemaking processes.
High-quality design and placemaking are at the heart of Croydon’s vision. Projects include large urban quarters and suburbs revival, delivery of the Council’s Growth Zone programme with significant public realm improvements, and high-profile mixed-use developments. The Placemaking Team is instrumental in transforming Croydon’s physical and environmental landscape and improving community well-being.
About the Placemaking Team
The Croydon Council Placemaking Team is an award-winning, multidisciplinary group of built environment practitioners experienced in strategic planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, research, public engagement, public realm, public art & culture, heritage, and conservation. It is part of the Spatial Planning Service, which integrates Croydon’s planning functions to provide a coordinated approach. The team has been recognized for best practices in proactive planning, contributing to several awards, including the Farrell Review recognition and being a Corporate Partner of the Design Council.
About the role
This role involves coordinating and supporting the Croydon Urban Room project, a physical and digital space for public participation that fosters connections between people and places—past, present, and future.
We seek candidates with innovative, design-led, and holistic approaches to public and stakeholder engagement, public programming, event & space management, and exhibition curation. Candidates should be independent, critical, and creative thinkers with experience in developing and delivering public-facing creative and cultural spaces and programmes at various scales. Skills in negotiation, communication, space management, event production, marketing, social media, community outreach, and knowledge of funding, bid writing, and contract management are desirable. An interest in Croydon and South London’s urban challenges and opportunities is also beneficial.
